Customized content for a whole course (screen selection) – Frontend configured parameters

Feb 06, 2015

I design a course for a Non-Profit Organization (sports). They need parameter-customized content for their students. Before starting the course students choose parameters on a frontend.

Rough description of content:

A bundle of screens (General Hello; General Good bye; Start Chapters; End Chapters; Content Screens; Same Content Screens in different languages). Chapters might be for beginners, experts, questionnaires. …

The content for each single screen is fix besides information, which might be entered on the Hello Screen like <Name; age; sex> and will be used during session only. Using the forward (resp. backward) button to cruise only the own personalized content. If possible, more options like counting all actually configured Screens (You are on screen 7/15 while the whole bundle might have 100 screens)

Rough description of frontends:

In fact, there is a double frontend necessary.

  1. The country division has to configure: “Our Package is called <Canada; Spain; Netherlands;…>” “We need Content for <beginners; experts; trainers;…>” “For beginners we need content screens <7;8;9;12;15;33;…>” “Configuration for Screen 7 for Canada: This screen is available in <English; French; Dutch; Spanish; Chinese;…>” … “Configuration for Screen 12: This screen is available in <English>” (No language option for screen 12)
  2. To enter a personalized course the student configures: “I need content for <Canada>” “I need the package for <beginners>” “My language is <French>”
So when this user starts the course he gets only the following screens: <General Welcome Screen; Start Screen Chapter Beginners; 7;8;9;12;77;78;79…; End Screen Chapter Beginners; General Good Bye Screen>. User sees all screens in French, but screen 12, which is available in English only.

There is no LMS or other kind of storing students information needed. Not decided yet whether the course will be available in the internet or has to be downloaded.

Single question is: Can a course like this be developed in Articulate? The frontends and the content are other scopes. I am the course designer not a developer.

Hi Astrid,

If I've understood your question correctly, what you'd like to do is create a single course with different branching options depending on the criteria that the learner enters (ex: Country, Level, etc).

If so, I believe that you can develop a course that does that using variables in Storyline. I would encourage you to check out this article and the following articles in that series to learn more about using variables.

Thanks Allison,

Yes, variables in (inside) Articulate are a great thing, but what I am actually looking for is to "import" the variables  from an external web-frontend. So all the branching inside the program can be influenced without touching the program, after it is once done correctly.

I checked with  a developer from Articulate and he said that something like this can't be done with Articulate. Let's hope for later. I will solve my "problem" another way now.

Greetings from the Black Forest Area,

Astrid
