Data Protection storytelling ideas

Oct 20, 2015

Hi everyone,

I need to create a compliance module on Data Protection in the workplace for all new staff to complete.

I could easily regurgitate all the information we have, make it engaging with interactions etc. but I think to really lift this drab subject I need to underpin it with a story.

I'm thinking something along the lines of a starting screen where you can pick a character who then follows an exciting story that underpins all the Data Protection principles.

Problem is, I'm really stuck on what storytelling concepts to use. Does anyone have any ideas or examples they've created or seen?

Thanks,

What about starting out showing what went wrong because someone didn't follow those principles? Show the negative media, loss of reputation to the company, people getting fired, etc. Then pause it and say, "What did Joe do wrong? You have a chance to go back in time and prevent this from happening."

It's like how crime shows will start with the murder, then back up to show the events that led to the tragedy. It immediately draws people in and shows why this topic matters in a concrete way. Don't make the intro too long, but you can make your point pretty clearly in 1-2 minutes.

This interactive video training on research misconduct uses this technique. This is all high quality video (one of my colleagues estimated this cost $1 million to produce). Ignore the production quality and think about the story. You don't have to be as complex in letting people pick a character to follow and show it from all those perspectives. I'm guessing your budget is not as big as theirs!
