Enabling learners to download a lesson

Jun 28, 2017

I checked the enable download button in the player but don't see any way for students to actually download from their end. I'm using LearnDash LMS and Storyline 3.

Thanks.

Hi Peggy, are you referring to the "Allow downloading for offline viewing" option in the publish settings?

This option is specific to the Articulate Mobile Application that is available for the iPad. It enables users to download the course to their iPad so that they can view it without an internet connection.

As far as I know, there is no other way users can download lessons.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm referring to.

I went to the app store on my ipad but that app is awful. Can't find a way to add a course or lesson to it. All of the reviews are negative. The version that went with SL2 worked well for me.

Are you making another app or tweaking that one? Will I ever be able to download my lessons?

Hi Peggy,

At the time, the app was to offset the Flash vs. HTML5 challenges. In its early days Storyline was Flash only and didn't really work well on some browsers and not at all on iPads. The app was released to support mobile offerings of the same desktop course.

The course itself still needs to be uploaded to a web server/LMS regardless of viewer access point. The "Allow downloading for offline viewing" is set at Publish time. Then, after uploading to a server and sending a URL to users, they click on the URL which launches the app (provided they have it on their iPad - otherwise they'll be prompted to download the app from the app store).

Once the course loads into the app on the iPad users have an option to 'download' the course. Meaning, install the course in the app for offline (disconnected) viewing.

Yes, the app is less than desirable but it served a need at the time. Today, with SL2 and SL3 the HTML5 output is much better along with the new responsive player. This is great but we still need a connection as there's no 'offline viewing' ability (yet). However, if users have tablets laptops like a Surface then you can package the course and load it on that device for offline viewing.

I know this doesn't necessarily answer your question or solve  your immediate needs, but hopefully this helps put things into context.

I appreciate your answer and realize that you can't do all things everyone wants at one time.

I have the course on an LMS and I have the Articulate app that I got a year or two ago. Also, my ipad is a little old.

When I click on an email link to the course on my ipad, it takes me to the web, not to your app. Is there something I can do to have it activate the app? Does it matter that the lessons are now made in SL3?

Hi I am an articulate customer just like you so have no control over the app. I have not used it ages so can't comment on how it is working now, but I am wondering if you need to update the app if you have not done so already. If your version is 1 or 2 years old it probably does not work with Storyline 3.

If you do have an up-to-date app and you are having problems then it might be worthwhile contacting Articulate Support to see what is going on. https://articulate.com/support/contact
