I am working with my main menu and I have a layer appear at the start of the course to give instruction. What I don't want however is for this to reappear whenever someone returns to the main menu from within the course.
I can't seem to recall how to do this (I'm sure) simple technique!
There may be a simpler way, but you could set up a number variable to change when the timeline for the main menu begins, and turn off the trigger to show the layer when the variable's value >1.

Cheryl, I like your suggestion. Here is another suggestion with a T/F variable:
Create variable LayerComplete with default value False.
Base layer trigger:
Show layer when timeline starts if variable LayerComplete equal to false
Variable on Layer:
Adjust variable LayerComplete to True when timeline starts on Layer.
