Photos vs. illustrations

Sep 09, 2015

Hi! I'm looking at ways to make e-learning more "professional", and one suggestion from colleagues was to remove illustrations (the illustration figures that come in the articulate package) and only have photo images. I was wondering if anyone has any suggested sources or studies that compare illustrations vs photo images and how they are perceived.

Thanks!

I'd second what Nick has said.

Illustration can be fantastic when done well. Whilst the character packs are excellent in their own right and provide a great solution for users with time, budget or skill set limitations it can be difficult to create a course that stands out from the crowd from an aesthetic point-of-view.

As much as it pains me to say it, aesthetics aren't everything so if using the character packs allows you to concentrate on the content then they're doing their job!

Re: photos, unless you're going to have custom photography taken it's worth bearing in mind that many of the stock images available stand out as being from stock libraries so your course might look more corporate without necessarily looking any more professional.
