Pre-test and post test

Jun 18, 2012

Currently the project I am working on is set on having a pre-test and then once you complete the pre-tes, read the article and then finish the quiz.

I need to translate the same into an online course. Can i set it up in articulate to have graded pre-test and a graded post-test. Can I get results for both in the LMS.

Also, need some idea to set up the pre-test, so that it does not feel like a pre-test to the users.

Hi, Sid -

Unfortunately, you can only capture one score for the LMS. This is a SCORM limitation since a SCORM data frame is only designed to hold one score / one completion.

The Tin Can API (next generation SCORM) will change that. Saw a demonstration on the weekly TIN CAN API call last week from Dave Mozealous that recorded activity streams for scored tests independently using Storyline. Pretty neat demonstration.

Hey Sid - if you're interested in questions banks (which allow you to pool and randomize your questions), you can check out these tutorials:

Also, regarding the result slides, here's how you can insert one.

Hi Jeanette,

Thanks fopr the links , however, I am not using Storyline, i am using presenter. Can i do the same in presenter

Oh I'm sorry Sid! I too thought you were using Storyline. But as Steve mentioned, you can do something similar in Presenter.

Regarding how to randomize/pool questions, here's a bit of info about how to do that in Quizmaker.

Regarding the pretest/post-test ... What you might consider doing, if you don't require learners to view the course content upon passing the pretest, is this: create a single quiz and insert it as the first slide in the course. In the quiz properties at the bottom of the placeholder slide, set up the branching so that if they pass, they jump directly to a wrap-up slide at the end of the course, or the course window closes. If they fail, branch them to the remaining content in the course. Then, at the end of that content, branch them back to the quiz for another try. Of course, in this situation they would need to keep retaking the quiz till they pass. Not sure if that's what you intended or not, but I thought I'd put it out there as an idea for you.

If the above suggestion doesn't fit what you need, you could use 2 quizzes. I wouldn't recommend trying to insert the same quiz twice... although it might appear that you can do this by duplicating the quiz placeholder slide in your PowerPoint file, I've seen cases where this seems to create issues with the published output not playing correctly. To avoid that, I'd use 2 separate quiz files. You could create the quiz once in Quizmaker and then just duplicate the file and give it a new name, and then insert that one in the insert each.

No problem... Jeanette, I like the idea or creating 2 quizzes howver, I can only have 1 of them as graded correct?

If that's the case then I thik I might have to take your first suggestion.

We want the users to take the pretest to view the course but they don't have to pass the pretest, even if they fail they can review it and start the course. However, they must pass the post test which they shoudl eb able to access only after completeing the course.

Then there is another component to it (survey) and its going to be a mandatory survey that they have to take in order to print their passing certificates.

Can I achieve this using Presenter.

Hi Sid,

Have you considered the option of breaking this up into two "courses"?

Going with your other question about how not to make the pre-test feel like a test....

Course #1 = Intro to Bottle Washing

  • Make it SUPER short
  • Just an interactive quiz and constuct feedback in such a way that it teaches. Won't feel like a quiz

Course #2 = Bottle Washing: How To

  • Put your main content here
  • Construct your final quiz

If you LMS allows.... make Course #1 a pre-requisite for Course #2 or put them in a sequnced learning plan.

Hope this helps,

Bob
