Simple course with videos not working well with mobile at all!

Nov 03, 2016

Hi there,

We are creating a fairly simple course, that should look like an interactive video; video plays, users makes a selection, next video plays and so on.

I have tried publishing in every format possible, used SCORM Cloud and Articulate Online but nothing seems to work... The videos stick, do not play until the end and are inconsistent when it comes to autoplaying or not, despite them having all the same settings.

The course behaves horridly on iPhone, iPad and Samsung Galaxy Edge.

Does anyone know why this might be or have any tips on how I can make this work for mobile?

Thanks

Hi Mandy,

We've made quite a few interactive videos and there are always issues with mobile delivery, usually because of file sizes mostly. Have you checked your compression settings and done a trial where the video is down to lowest quality on publish? If that solves the problem it is a case of trial and error to find the best balance between quality and functionality. Another tip is to think carefully about how storyline preloads video. There are some helpful threads on the forum about this, and we've certainly found that stacking videos in one way over another can significantly improve (or break) a module when on mobile. Also worth checking for diagnosis of the problem is to load the course on a computer but open the HTML5 version as that is what your mobile devices will be loading. Could be an issue with the triggers you are using too.

Hope you find the bugs!

Hi Colin,

Best bet is to have a search through the forums for specifically the issues you're facing. With regards to compression, generally the best way try to get a good balance between quality and having things work is to go right to the lowest quality compression and work up, publishing and checking until you've found sort of the upper limit of file size, but it sounds like that might not be your only issue.

One thing that I think my comment before didn't address are some of the complexities of video for mobile- things like iOS not allowing auto play, some issues to do with layering and video not resetting on HTML5 output. There are ways to resolve pretty much everything, but its hard to give a catch all solution.  If you're able to share the course you're having trouble with and give some info I'll gladly help out, but for a lot of stuff having a good old trawl through the forums will turn up some great help.
