Top down sequencing? Possible in Articulate??

May 13, 2012

I'm reading William Hortons E-Learning by design... i like the idea of presenting content in such a way that the learner decides how much information they need (dependent on their pre-existing knowledge base). The example he uses involves a tabbed page which allows the learner to deal with the concept being presented at overview level, or if necessary to go on to press for more information using 'show me', 'coach me' and let me' tabs. In the example he gives, its all available on one page, and one presumes the learner can move on without opening those tabs or areas that he or she doesn't require. Is it possible to structure/present content within Articulate in this way?? I'd really appreciate any ideas or views on this. Thanks in advance. Lee

Lee,

What a great book! LOVE it.

One way to do this in Articulate Presenter is by using hyperlinks and branching. For example, let's assume I'm creating an eLearning course on Making Brownies (just because I'd love to have one right now). If I'm listing ingredients on one slide, but also want to give learners an opportunity to learn more about additional ingredients that could be added, I could create a shape with a text box in the upper right that says "Learn More". I could hyperlink that "Learn More" box to an additional slide in my PowerPoint that includes the additional information. The additional slide would have a "Back" button that takes the learner back to the ingredient slide when they're finished looking at the additional information.

Another way of doing this is using the toolbar tabs. There's a post about this on the Word of Mouth blog here.

You mentioned the "Show Me", "Coach Me" and "Let Me" tabs. Hopefully someone else has a better idea of how to do this in Articulate Presenter. I know Storyline does a great job of this due to the screen recording feature (and others). If you want to preview a course that was built in Storyline and does a great job of this, check out the Sales Orientation course by ThinkingKap Learning Solutions Inc. here. Once in the course, apply for the Sales Admin position. Each step allows you to complete a process (Let Me), get a hint (Coach Me),  or to just show the step and move on (Show Me).

With using Articulate Presenter, I would probably use hyperlinks that link to slides that have the appropriate level of information on them.

I hope this helps or at least gets you started!

Keepin' the joy,

Hi Lee,

Agree with Patti about Storyline on the Show Me, Coach Me, Let me approach.

What tool(s) are you using? Do you have Presenter, Engage, and Quizmaker? Have you considered using the Presenter attachments tab as a way for Learners to get an overview? This can be displayed and hidden at any time. If you have Engage, various interactions can be added as Player tabs to provide more information also. Engage interactions do have some level of interactivity.

Do you have a specific example of something? That's always helpful when trying to brainstorm.

Have you tried any of the Building Better courses tutorials:

Those may help.

Hi Rebecca. Many thanks! - I have all the tools you list, but hadn't thought about using the attachments tab. Off the top of my head i know it can be used, but wouldn't it only be good for a single use? i.e. only once per course? The example in the Horton booked (looked at least!) like each page that displayed offered a selection of tabs. Maybe im over estimating what he was offering!, but bottom line the penny has dropped and i have made the realization that i could have 10 learners accessing a course who range from the novice to the pro and i currently don't have a mechanism for differentiating the degree to which they access content. The tutorials are great and in truth i am learning at a faster rate now than i ever did at school, i just hope my ageing grey matter can retain at least some of it! Many thanks again for your kind advice. best regards, lee

Hi Lee,

Not sure if we're speaking at cross purposes. Apologies if so. Perhaps I can create a Screenr in a bit to demo what I mean. But in the meantime:

The attachments tab and the tabs that are created by inserting Engage interactions are always available. Here's an example of a 4-slide "course" (obviously drawn up just as a demo) with 3 tabs: an Engage interaction that's a timeline, an Engage interaction that's a glossary, and a Word document. I dimmed the background so you could see where the tabs are. Learners can click to expand these at any time.

Back in a sec...

Hi Rebecca, What you have created does the job perfectly. One question though: Are the attachments tied to one slide? one topic? or one interaction? If i cover 5 topics, can i generate 5 sets of 'attachments'? Im trying to develop the supporting guidance for each topic. Maybe the hyperlinks and branching might do it?

Hi Lee,

Glad we're on the right track. Not entirely sure I understand your question re topics/interactions.

Attachments are definitely not tied to one slide.

Easy to test: create 2 slides. Then from the Articulate tab, click the attachments option and browse to your attachment. Preview the 2 slides. Note that you can access the attachment from either slide.

Engage Interactions not tied to one slide if set to player tabs

So in the screen shot, you can see that these interactions are set up to show on the tabs, not on a slide.
