Tough Question - scoring and totalling a spreadsheet in a Quiz in Articulate Storyline

Nov 26, 2014

I have a tough question, and I am not sure it is doable:

I am creating a quiz at the end of a course.  The purpose is to make sure that the learner scores the assessment instrument they have just learned about correctly based on a vignette they have read.

Is there a way to create a slide in a quiz or elsewhere that is like a spreadsheet and will total the learners score at the bottom of the page?  If they get the right total score in the final cell, an action is triggered, if they don't they have to complete the above cells again.

See attached image with notes written on it.

Thank you for your wisdom!

Hi Robert,

Thanks for posting your question here in the E-Learning Heroes forums!

You should be able to achieve what you want using text entry fields and number variables.

You can do simple mathematical calculations for variables (such as adding values) so you could add up the total of all the values input by the learner at the bottom of the table. (as indicated in your graphic).

Here's a few articles about working with variables to help you get started:

Hope this helps you out! Shout out if  you have more questions. Good luck!

Hi Nicole,

I have been exploring variables. What a cool thing they are! Another
Storyline AhHA!
I am having a problem setting up the variables right, though.

Here are the problems:

I created 2 variables (q1 and q2). and a variable Sum.

I added two data entry boxes and then triggers for those boxes that add
values to the variable Sum.

When I change the number of one of the boxes, sum keeps going up, it
doesn't just reflect the sum. So, if I put 3 in one box and 4 in the
other, it will say 7 for Sum. but then when I change one box to 5, it
will say 12 for Sum and so one. It never goes down to just the sum of
the two boxes.

How can I reset Sum back to the sum of the two boxes only and not have
it keep going up. Is there a reset or something?

Thank you for all the help! You folks ARE heroes!!

Best,
Bob

Hey there Bob!

Glad you've discovered variables and you're having exploring and learning more about them. This will open up a lot of new possibilities for your courses!! How exciting!

I can understand the dilemma you've run into... and what you want to achieve can be done several different ways in Storyline.

Here's how I did it:

  • Created 3 numeric variables like you did (Question1, Question2, and Sum) and created my slide with my two text entry boxes and my "Reference"to my "Sum" variable.
  • I added a "Submit" button. When you click this button it adds the value of both Questions to the sum variable, and it also displays a new layer called "Reset".
  • This "Reset" layer has the option "disable user from clicking on base slide" (so they can't keep adding numbers in the text field) and also a Reset button that hides the submit button.
  • When you click "Reset" button it has three triggers that resets the value of all three variables to 0. And it also has a trigger to "hide the layer" and return to the base layer. Then they can re enter more numbers and keep going in an endless cycle.

You can view it in action here

And I've attached the .story file for you to see exactly how it was built. Hope this helps you. Let me know if there's additional questions.

Who are you people?! That is great! I am so glad I asked the
question. That cut my stress down totally.

That is exactly what I will do. I sure like this program alot. The
more I learn about the more I like it. So many possibilities!

Thank you for your time on this Holiday. I will do what you suggested.

Best,

Bob
