Trying to punch up visual appeal for a suite of online courses

Mar 27, 2017

I've just taken over development of a suite of eLearning coursework for professionals. We have an ID part time, a couple of part time coursewriters, but I'm trying to figure out how to raise the level of visual appeal without breaking the bank. We need someone to advise us on how to make the whole package look clean and tidy and higher-end, how to stay within brand guidelines (with a color palate that isn't great for online use) and how to improve the user interface without creating clutter.

I'm thinking what we need is a graphic designer or web designer who can collaborate w our ID to help create templates in Storyline that we can use as a jumping off point for future modules/courses. Where I'm getting stuck is 1) what, exactly is the phrasing I use to describe the skill set I'm looking for and 2) what's the right rate for this kind of project?

Hi, Deborah:

Seems like you could use either an experienced freelance elearning developer or a graphic designer. Truth be told, I think you get more bang for buck out of an experience freelancer (Nancy Winowski, Stephanie Harnett, Phil Mayor to name a few). They understand elearning and have the visual chops to get the job done relatively quickly.

A graphic designer would also work, you'd just have to step in an make sure both parties (graphic designer and ID were on the same page.) Graphic designers tend to work cheaper than elearning developers.

As far as describing the skills set, I think you are off to a good start.

  • Create a visually appealing elearning template
  • Ensure modules fit within corporate brand guidelines
  • Improve user interface on current templates

Let us know how it goes.
