Unable to keep state change

Hello all

I am creating a hiding menu, very similar to the video post I found below.

My issue is that I am also trying to show when the user has visited certain menu items with a state change.  When I return to the menu, the previously selected item still shows "normal" state.  I have done this before, but always while referring to a particular slide.  In this case, my menu is on a master slide.  I thought adding variables would make that work, but it didnt so now I am stuck.  I appreciate any help on this.
