Matching Question Randomizing Both Sides
I created a matching question as part of a final assessment for a course, but I can't figure out how to make the quiz randomize only one side of the exercise. For this particular question, users are matching an action with the appropriate order that action is taken (Step 1, Step 2, Step 3, etc.). I want the actions column randomized, but want the steps column to show up in numerical order, with Step 1 at the top and Step 5 at the bottom. I have tried toggling the Column Freeze setting to freeze matches, toggling it to freeze choices, and swapping which column the steps and actions are listed, but it always randomizes both sides. I did not have this issue while creating matching questions for knowledge checks earlier in this course (the right column always stayed in order), just this final quiz assessment. Any tips on how to fix this? Thanks!

Hi MKDevins,
Did you get a resolution for this issue? I'm having the same problem. Our quiz settings are to randomise the question and answer order which we need for the multiple choice/single choice questions but we have a process matching question where I need Steps 1 through 6 on the left to stay in order while the matches on the right randomise. When using the "Freeze choices" option, all I get is randomise steps 1 through 6 locked in place on the left, and randomised matches on the right. Is there any way to stop the left hand choices column from randomising?
Thanks!
Fiona
Hi Ranoif,
Great question, and thanks for sharing the details of what you’re seeing. You’re not alone. MKDevins ran into this same issue recently, and we confirmed it’s a bug.
When the Shuffle answer choices setting is turned on in the quiz, it ends up overriding the freeze option in matching questions, which is why both columns get randomized.
One thing you can try in the meantime is turning off Shuffle answer choices to keep the left-hand column in order while still randomizing the matches on the right.
I know that’s not ideal, and I’m sorry it’s slowing things down. Our team is tracking this bug, and we’ll share an update once a fix is available. In the meantime, here’s a bit more about how we tackle bugs: How We Tackle Bugs.
If you’d like more targeted help, you’re always welcome to open a support case. We appreciate you raising this here!

Thank you for confirming that! The randomisation of answers is more important for us right now than the matching so I've reworked the question into multiple choice questions. :-)
