Slide layer does not open after timeline reaches cue point

Hello everyone,
I have a question. For a storyline project I'm working on an interactive video. I want a slide layer to open with a question when the timeline reaches a certain time. I have added a cue point (as you can see in the picture below). However when testing the slide layer does not open when the timeline reaches the cue point and I don't understand why.

When I was building I tested with a cue point around 0.02 and everything worked fine. But now with this new cue point it doesn't work anymore.

Anyone has an idea what I can do about this?

Thank you for thinking along:)

Eline

  • Hi tweline,

Thanks for reaching out and sharing the screenshot! I understand that the slide layer does not open when the timeline reaches the cue point you've set.

Curious about this behavior, I created the attached Storyline course with cue points and layers to replicate the issue. I found that the layer does not open when viewed via timeline preview, but it does show when previewed using the Player's preview button. I prepared a screen recording of my tests for you.

If your project does not execute the Show Layer trigger, even with the Player's preview button, we'd be happy to investigate further. Would you be willing to share your Storyline file with us so we can examine how the other course elements are set up? You may also share it privately by sending it along in a support case. We'll delete it when we're done testing.

    Hello Eric,

Apologies for the late reply, somehow I didn't get a notification from your answer.

When I tested this morning again the cue points did work in my project, I guess it had something to do with me not watching the entire video but jumping a few minutes ahead in the timeline when testing.

    Thank you for thinking along:)

    • No worries, tweline! Glad my colleague Eric could assist you! Thanks for sharing the good news that the cue points are working as expected in your Storyline project.

Feel free to share any future questions or discoveries in the community.

Have a wonderful start to 2025!

So we ran into an new problem when testing... I found out that when you pause the video the timeline keeps running which results in the questions popping out too early (I'm using cue points at the moment).

I found a workaround to remove the video controls and add a pause button, which leads to a layer where the timeline is paused. However I got feedback from the students that now they miss the player under the video... The would like to see how long the video is taking, being able to play back, etc.

Do you guys have any solution for this?

    • Hello tweline,

There isn't a way to link triggers with video controls, so pausing the timeline via interaction with the video controls is currently not supported. The method that works is the one you've already identified: to interact with the video using available triggers. I understand this isn't ideal, especially if the duration of the video is important. Please feel free to open a feature request with our product team if you'd like to enhance how video controls behave!
