Translate "trick" no longer finds missing fonts

I recently used the translate feature to try and locate where a font is in a file. I've had great success in the past locating missing fonts with that.

I'm using Nicole Legault's excellent quiz show template located here. They file says it's missing Bebas, Gyparody Hv, and Gyparody Rg. When I use replace, I can replace Bebas (It's most of the board - category, numbers, questions & answers), and the Gyparody Hv (not sure where). Gyparody Rg still remains after I try replacing it. It is the category on the question slides, Correct/Incorrect on the feedback layer, and QUIZ GAME! Title. It's also the continue button on the feedback layers. Everything but the continue button replaces, so it says it's missing. I tried replacing it on the feedback master, but it didn't update down to the slides. If I reapply the master, it moves the 'Continue' button slightly, but doesn't change the font.

I initially exported the file as translate to try and find the fonts. The exported version in Word doesn't show any of the missing fonts. Has this changed, or has the way Microsoft handles unknown fonts changed? Any thoughts? Suggestions? Funny anecdotes? Thanks!

  • Hi Trey,

I'm sorry you're having this issue with replacing fonts! Try to follow the steps in this article, and use Arial as a replacement font to test the functionality. If switching the fonts using Arial works, then there might be an issue with the replacement font that you're using.

I hope this helps and thanks for reaching out!

  • Thanks John, I've already tried that. We don't have Admin function, so all I have are the regular system fonts, I'm not trying to use something non-standard. As I noted above, the replace works on everything except the font on the continue buttons on the feedback layers. I was hoping the translate would help me locate exactly where it was happening. In this example, I was able to locate where the trouble was with trial and error. I actually used BlackAdder ITC the first round to make it blindingly obvious if something replaced. I've had other projects where we couldn't locate all instances and used translate to help us find it, then replace on the location if necessary.

  • The other 1/2 of the question - does the translate trick no longer work to find locations of a font if it's not installed on the system?

  • Hi Trey,

Great call on opening a support case! You're case is in good hands, and you can also share with the team that the translate feature is not working as expected for you when it comes to identifying fonts that are used in the project.  They'll be able to help you sort things out!
