Custom font errors - diacritic marks (Vietnamese) not showing up in the correct font
Aug 30, 2018
Hi all,
I've been testing the new custom fonts feature in Rise in anticipation of translating our content. (Our priorities are Vietnamese, Chinese, Thai, and Indonesian.)
Installing Open Sans as a Custom font, Vietnamese text is showing incorrectly in Rise. Many of the character are displaying in a smaller serif font rather than in our selected Custom font:
For comparison, using the same typeface in another program (Word), every character displays as it should:
I've tested with a number of typefaces, and the same characters always appear as the same smaller, serif font. This example is using the Google font Kanit:
Is there a reason why many of the characters used in non-English text are reverting to a standard serif font? This makes Rise practically unusable for translated text at this stage.
Are there any workarounds? Why is this problem ocurring?
Best,
Alex

Hi Alex,
Thanks for these examples. I know our team is investigating some similar issues so I'll share this with them.
I'll let you know here as soon as I have more info.
Hi Alexander.
We have the same problem. Have you found a solution?
Thanks
Hi there, Aukalen. We're looking into how we can help make characters and custom fonts look great in your Rise 360 courses.
Web fonts have variations in them, and you may see your text use the default font for characters that aren't included in the custom font being used. With that in mind, check out this community solution. Let me know how that works for you!
We're also happy to have a closer look at your web font file and how it appears in your course. You can share that information privately with us here.
Thanks for your feedback Crystal. The problem is that although I can upload custom WOFF fonts with all the characters needed, they only apply to Heading and body but not to all the player text.
I see, Aukalen. We're tracking requests for custom font support in buttons and in the sidebar. I'll tag this discussion to be updated with any changes!
Hi Crystal,
Is there any update on this?
We have the same issue with our Vietnamese language content. We uploaded a custom font (open sans) but it doesn't display correctly in our Rise courses. As Alexander mentioned, any characters with diacritic marks appear smaller.
Thanks,
Ashley
Hi Ashley!
Check out this article: How to Get Non-Latin Characters to Display Properly
Give those steps a try, and let us know if that solves the issue!
Alyssa, Did you see my post? (3 posts above)
Hi Alyssa,
We have tried that multiple times without success. Characters with diacritics still appear smaller than characters without diacritics.
I would appreciate any support you can provide to fix this.
Thank you.
Ashley
Hello, Aukalen! I was replying to Ashley's question, but you received a notification because you're still subscribed to this discussion. You can unsubscribe by clicking this link to open the discussion, then clicking the Subscribed button at the top of the page.
Hi there, Ashley! I'm sorry to hear those steps didn't work for you. I'm going to open a case to put you in touch with our Support Engineers. You'll hear from the team soon!
Alyssa,
What I meant was that if you see my previous reply, you would have realised that the solution you propose doesn't work.
Ashley is asking about the same thing the OP asked and the same thing I responded too. I know I can unsubscribe but don't want to do that I as I am still waiting for a resolution on this issue.
Thanks for clarifying, Aukalen! We are seeing some issues with built-in fonts (such Open Sans) not displaying correctly in Rise 360. We're taking a closer look at this problem, and we'll update everyone here when we have new information to share!
The problem is not just Open Sans. There are no fonts that display diacritic marks for Vietnamese correctly everywhere (content and player text).
Hi Aukalen,
I have finally found a font that works. I came across a Google font called 'Be Vietnam' a few days ago. I've added it into my Rise course as a custom font and the diacritic marks are finally displaying correctly.
You can find the font here: https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Be+Vietnam?query=be+vietnam
I'd still prefer to be able to use Open Sans but until Articulate get around to fixing this issue across their standard fonts, this is a workable solution for me.
Best,
Ashley
Ashley does it work on the label or only for the Header/Body?
Hi Susan,
Right now, there isn't a way to customize the label font in Rise 360. We'll let you know if that changes in the future!
@Alyssa Gomez - Are there any updates? I've tried loading several custom fonts and none of them seem to be showing Vietnamese correctly.
Hi Tiffany,
Have you tried the font 'Be Vietnam'? It's worked for me.
You can download it here: https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Be+Vietnam?query=be+vietnam
Kind regards,
Ashley
Ashley, it did not work. Each character with a glyph was in a serif font and each that did not have a glyph was in a sans serif font.
Hi Tiffany!
Did you follow the steps in this article when you uploaded your custom font?
Hello everyone,
Any update on this issue? I am having the same problem, with Romanian text. I followed the steps for downloading the Font Family and I applied the steps outlined in the articles posted by Alyssa. Are there any other recommendations?
Much appreciated,
Madalina
Sorry to hear you're struggling with a custom font, Madalina. It sounds like you're following all of the correct steps. Can you tell me more about where you're getting stuck? If you can share a screenshot of how the font appears in Rise 360, that would be helpful, too!
Hi Alyssa,
I tried all the solutions you suggested, even tried the font Bevietnam as a friend recommended above, but all did not work properly.
Pls see my screen shot.
I'm sorry about that. Right now, there isn't a way to customize the font in the sidebar menu. We'll let you know if we add that option in the future!
Hi everyone! If you're using Roboto or Open Sans fonts in your courses, we've just updated those fonts to the latest version. Clear your browser cache to see the effect in your courses.
