RISE - MasteryScore = Null issue in LMS
Oct 19, 2018
Hi!
I'm having some issues with RISE courses in my companies LMS, currently, the courses are marking as 'PASSED' when they are below the 80% PASS RATE. Testing different Storyline Product outputs, we don't have this issue with SL2 or SL360 and we have also tested Studio 13".
The user can PASS the course under the 80% PASS RATE using the 'Exit Course' button inside a RISE course or by clicking the 'X' button on the new window tab. Once they return to our LMS with a failed score they are being marked as PASSED.
The only thing we can find that differs in the course outputs is a 'MasteryScore' setting.
See compared outputs below...

Is this a known issue with RISE? Will this 'NULL' setting be messing with our LMS and not correctly tracking the SCORE? Is there anything we are doing wrong and is there any way to fix this?

Hi there, Michelle. Thanks for all of the helpful troubleshooting! I did some testing on my end to mimic what you're seeing in SCORM Cloud.
When I take a simple Rise quiz, and use the Exit button to leave the course before finishing the quiz, this is what I'm seeing for SCORM 1.2, passed/incomplete, and passed/failed...
The completion and success statuses, showing incomplete and unknown:
And the debug log for the LMSFinish line, showing Rise sending those statuses:
The debug information you shared in your post looks like Rise has communicated the
SuccessStatus
as failed. Is that from the same session as when you got your test results: 20%? I'm assuming the green 20% and ability to print a certificate indicates a passing score.Let me know what you think. We'll figure this out together!
Hi Crystal,
The 20% example in our LMS is the same course I have been testing in SCORM Cloud.
Scorm Cloud is presenting results as I would expect. However, my LMS isn't replicating the same results.
The only difference I can see between a 'RISE With Test course' (that isn't working in my LMS) and an 'SL2 With Test course' (that is working in my LMS) is the "MasteryScore" status.
Do you know why RISE courses with tests embedded have 'MasteryScores' that are NULL? Shouldn't they be the same as an SL2 course which is set to 80% (or your chosen pass rate)?
Gotcha, Michelle. I'm following up with my team about the
MasteryScore
piece, as it should be what is used to determine the learner's success! :)I'll follow up with you here with more information as soon as I can - it may be in a week or so. Thanks for replying!
Thanks Crystal! I will look forward to your findings.
Was any further information found about this issue?
Hi! Was any further information found about this issue? I would really appreciate some feedback on my RISE issue.
Can you let me know the functionality for this LMS only button inside the 'Interactive' block library? Is it any different to the 'EXIT COURSE' button that can be turned on at the top right of a course?
Crystal? Have you or your team come up with anything surrounding my MasteryScore issue? More and more clients are coming to us with embedded assessments and we think the MasteryScore being set to NULL is really messing with our LMS.
Hi Michelle,
I’m sorry you’re still feeling stuck here.
I submitted a case to our Support Team on your behalf so that we can get this resolved quickly. You should hear from someone on the team with some follow-up questions.
If I can help with anything else, please let me know!
Thanks, Martika! I'm following up with the Support Team now.
Did you ever resolve this? Because I'm in a situation where the LMS provider requires masteryscore to be defined in the XML Manifest from Rise, but it is not – and I just read in another thread that it is by design in Rise and that it is something you need to work with the LMS provider to resolve.
However, that is not an option in my case unfortunately.
Hi there, Andre. I'm sorry that this discussion wasn't updated. While this behavior is LMS-specific, I'm sharing the impact with my team to see if we can make any changes that will help. We'll keep you posted here.
Here's some clarification about the MasteryScore and how it relates to Rise 360 courses:
Rise courses determine whether the learner has passed, and Rise sends the actual score and whether it's passing or failing to the LMS. Rise doesn't rely on the LMS to look at the actual score and determine if it's passing or failing.
You might see the MasteryScore element is equal to "Null" in some SCORM formats. This field is included to align with SCORM specifications, but we don't actually use it. The value is "Null" so that it's not blank.
I hope that helps with understanding the current functions!
