I never got a correct answer. Obviously I'm not understanding. It would be nice to have a demonstration of calculating a heading using another scenario, perhaps like being on water instead of the mountains, then go to the slide you have for testing knowledge.
New to compass reading, I was in the same boat. Apparently the red part of the needle represents North, not white...what I was basing my computation on. Another site suggested that you remember "red in the shed". The red part of the needle must be in the red "North" arrow on the compass dial. see if this info allows you to get the right answer.
Yes, I never got it right, either. To ease frustration, some further guidance - or the correct answer to give a clue where I went wrong - would be helpful. The concept itself, and the very real aspect of the exercise, is great!
Fascinating, but it requires just a little bit more feedback. When an error occurs, a popup should inform the person that more is involved.... including typing the answer.
A person needs to drag two different objects, the compass AND the round dial inside. This was not immediately apparent to me... who has no experience with using a compass for orienteering.
Yes, AFTER you drag the compass so that it lines up with the "destination" AND after you rotate the dial.... and AFTER you type in the number.... do you know that you did it right.
I had to do this several times before I realized this. The correct answer is 310.... followed by a click on the GO button.

Yes, it took me a couple of tries to fully understand the directions. But even when I was sure, the problem lies in how accurately one lines up the arrow with the distant point. I kept getting between 300 and 305, and with no feedback, I couldn't determine if I was even on the right track. It's good to know I was, I just didn't have it lined up quite perfectly. But I even used a straight edge on the screen to try to get it right.
One thing is clear-it engaged us enough to want to keep trying. :-)
I tried 3 times.
1st try: Incorrect
2nd try: 305 - correct
3rd try: 301 - correct
There must be some "wiggle room" built in to allow for a range of answers (I haven't downloaded it yet to look @ the .story file).
I was able to get it right on my 2nd try. The instructions are a part of the "Incorrect" feedback. Once I read the instructions, my Boy Scout training came back to me (it's been a few decades!)
I agree w/ the others - the instructions should be provided first, since most of us have never learned how to use a compass - and those of us who have don't use this skill very often!
Great concept but I struggled with this. I feel that there needs to be a demo on how to successfully operate the compass before the learner tackles this scenario.
