Carousel Interaction duplicating images displaying no media

Jun 07, 2011

I am using the current version of the Carousel Interaction and the No Media is appearing in the interaction. The interaction is on the LMS. It's an AICC course. Please see example below. This interaction only has 7 images but this user has seen up to 20. The additional images have the no media icon.  How do I correct this?  I have also seen this occur with stairstep . The interaction will have 3 steps but once it is published and on the LMS 9 steps will show.

Hi Alice,

Can you replicate the issue on a version of the interaction published by itself instead of uploaded to the LMS?

One solution would be to remove the slide that contains the Engage interaction, publish the entire presentation, and then close PowerPoint.  This will remove the extra data from the PPTA file.  Then, open your presentation back up, republish the Engage interaction to your presentation, and then republish the presentation to your LMS.

Hi Brian,

I am having the same issue.  It's an interaction I have used before and it has worked great.  Now it shows "No Media."  I have re-inserted the images and it works fine in preview and when I publish directly from Engage.  When I bring it into PPT (2007) and preview or publish the interaction shows "no media".  I followed the steps you outlined above and unfortunately it didn't work.

Doug and Alice,

Please make sure your project files do not reside on a networked drive when authoring and publishing; this has the potential to corrupt the xml data used by all engage interactions inside of Presenter.

Please make sure you are publishing to a local drive (C: Drive) – If you are attempting to publish to or have the project saved to a networked location or a USB drive , this will not work as expected. The “No Media” icon was included with this interaction for 3 reasons.

1. To notify the author, that you have not selected an image or movie for the given step.

2. The publish was not complete, because it was saved to or published to an invalid location. This can be a directory path that is too deep. The Windows operating system prevents folder paths deeper than 256 charters in length. This would mean, if you are publishing to or have saved to a really long folder path (example: C:\This is a folder\This is another folder\Another Folder\Here is another Folder\Oh Yeah This is a Folder Too\We Are getting too Deep\Better be careful\Your Content Might Not Publish to Here\OK we are way too deep\Need to back off\This folder is too Deep and not all of your files will get Saved or Published here\).

3. When uploaded to a server, the files were not uploaded via the FTP client in Binary Mode. Most all FTP software, should have an option to upload in a Binary Transfer Mode. If this mode is not selected, the data.xml file that holds the list of image names and locations cannot be read and will display a “No Media” Icon.

Try publishing and/or saving your project to a shorter path, the Desktop for example.

Thanks David.

Hmmm, I'm publishing to my local drive/desktop.  It's a very strange issue for me as it publishes fine from within Engage but not PPT.  One thing that could be causing an issue is that I did move that Engage file to a different location for a while.  But, I've done that before with other files, interactions and QM's and get things connected again in pretty short order (perhaps by dumb luck).  This one has me baffled.

OKAY!  I rebuilt the program thinking that perhaps it was either a corrupt PPT or currupt PPTA.  I even shortened up my naming conventions to check that off the list.   I brought in the different interactions one at a time and published after each one.  The carousel was working great until I brought in a Flashcard interaction as a tab...then the carousel stopped working again.  I have 3 different interactions as tabs.  I worked through every combination of tabs and each time I added the Flashcard the carousel would stop working ("No Media").  Is there a conflict with the carousel and flashcard community interactions?

Doug,

Excellent troubleshooting! As you discovered, it is possible there's a conflict with the FlashCards and the Carousel in the same presentation; both of these interaction were built with the same SDK and might be referencing similar variables. I will look into this from my end and post back when I complete my tyesting.

Thanks!

Doug,

I was unable to reproduce the issue using your configuration. I placed an eight step FlashCards interaction in the Presenter Tabs and a 3 step interaction at the slide level. I reversed the number of steps for each and still could not reproduce this issue. Please make sure you have the latest Carousel interaction installed. I fixed an issue in version 1.5 where the image thumbnails would not load when in Presenter alongside the Tic-Tac-Toe or Flipbook interactions. The most current version should read 1.6 when choosing the Carousel interaction from Engage.

If you wouldn't mind, I would appreciate it if you could submit a case  and/or upload a stripped down version of your project files where the issue is reproducible. You can do this at the following links. Please add "attn: David Burton" to the subject line.
