Engage not working in new LMS - Canvas

Oct 17, 2012

Hello,

Need your help. We are switching from BlackBoard 9 to Canvas (developed by Instructure) and are experiencing the following issues with our Articulate files in this new LMS --in particular Articulate Engage:

When we try to open an Engage (activated from a Presenter file) from inside Canvas it  either does not play at all or it plays and strips out the images in the Engage.

We have also tested independent Engages (tabs etc.) and they do not work.

We have tested it across platforms (PC, Macs) and across browsers (IE, Chrome, Firefox, Safari) and in IE -- the Engage plays but strips out the images. In all the other browsers it  just hangs and you see the turning wheel.

We have contacted the Canvas folks and they say they do not support Articulate products. What??

But, they are trying. Not sure how long this will take.

Meanwhile, I thought I can try to post here to see if anyone else has experienced this and perhaps have a fix?

Just fyi, we do not place our Articulate files on a separate server (not feasible at this point), we embed them in the courses inside the LMS.

Thanks.

Regards,

Oma

Hi Oma,

Our institution recently switched from Blackboard to Canvas, and we ran into similar issues displaying Articulate Storyline projects.

From the research I've done, it seems to be an issue with the way Canvas handles the uploading of Image files into the Amazon cloud.

Even though in your 'Files' section everything looks as though it is organized correctly, Canvas has a media manager that moves the files elsewhere and breaks the reference links within your project. The strange part is that it seems intermittent, and never has consistent results.

The way we got around this was to publish our project files to our own webserver and link to them within Canvas.

Also, in case you plan to use quizzing in your projects, you will be disappointed to find out that Canvas only has limited support for SCORM and AICC due to legitimate security issues. This means that your project will display, but will not send any scores to the gradebook.

Hope this helps!

John

Hi John,

Thank you for your response. It is very much appreciated. We did make a little progress by working with the Canvas folks where they realized it is a "bug" they needed to fix and not a "feature" that they needed to add in their system. They say that they are working to fix the "bug". They cannot provide a timeline.

For us --moving the articulates to a web server is an option --but causes increased workload just by the sheer number of courses that we now have to go into and re-link. What a pain and waste of resources. I am really not happy with Canvas about this.  In the end --it will cost us more money than budgeted because additional resources are needed to move the files over,  redo the links in the many courses and the cost of maintaining another server ---not good options.

Regards,

Oma
