Presenter video cut short by Carousel interaction

May 08, 2011

Hi all,

I've been using the Carousel interaction in Engage but have come across a problem which i cant find a solution to.

On the slide in which i use this interaction, i have a video playing in the presenter panel on the left (which is 1:47 long) and have 3 objects used in the carousel.

Now when the slide begins (and the video automatically starts), if i click through all three images, the slides comes to an end and the video stops. Is there a way i can have the video play for the entire 1.47 ?

Thanks in advance

Hi Osman,

You'll need to find a way for your interaction to be 1:47 in length.  You can do this by inserting faux audio for each step.  Alternatively, the default duration for a step in an interaction is 5 seconds. Currently, it cannot be reduced beyond that from within the software. If you would like to see this feature in a future release, please submit a feature request to us:

You may be able to change the duration of a step by modifying your published output. Please note that the steps below are not supported by Articulate:

1. Publish your presentation > Click Open Folder

2. Open the Data folder

3. Open the SWF folder

4. Open the Engage folder for that particular interaction

5. Open the engage_content folder

6. Open the data.xml file in a program like Notepad

7. In the first line, you'll see this:

"autoplayduration="5"

Change the number from 5 to 36 (36 x 3 = 108 seconds = 1:48).

8. Save the file & test your presentation.

Thanks for the reply Brian!

I have already tried something similar to what you have described above, however if the user clicks to the next step before 36sec (which they will), the timeline in the seek bar will jump to 36 sec even though the video may be on 10sec for example. Similarly, clicking on the third step before 72sec (first two steps) will result in the slide finishing before the video.

Putting in faux audio will have the same problem i think.

Really appreciate the reply Brian, hope someone can find a solution to this!

Hey,

I found a solution to the problem:

I insert a flash video for the presenter panel as before, but this time also added another video of the same length but with no audio TO THE SLIDE.. This second video is hidden behind the engage interaction, and cannot hear it because audio has been removed from it. Its only purpose is to extend the slide long enough for the video in the presenter panel to finish. And you are still able to click through all the steps!

Hope that helps for anyone who might be facing the same issue.

Thanks again Brian for the help!

Osman
