Matching/Drag and Drop Interaction with Terms and Definitions

Nov 03, 2011

Hi, I'm trying to create a matching interaction that allows users to match 7 terms (2-3 words each) with their definitions (some of which are long - up to 60 words). Ideally, I would give the user one chance and then, on failure, show them the correct matches.

This seems like such a simple interaction, but I haven't been able to make it work in Quizmaker, Presenter, or Captivate. Per some postings here, I've also tried dragster and a few other sites.

Can anyone recommend a solution? Thanks.

Welcome to Heroes, John!

Have you tried setting the Quiz Properties to permit only one attempt (this can also be done at question level), and if incorrect, branch to a blank slide that explains each incorrect answer?

Here's a tutorial that may help clarify:

Let me know if that's what you're hoping to do...

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the reply. That's not quite what I'm after, but I don't think I did a good job explaing my intention.

I have seven terms with seven definitions. I want to scramble the terms and then give users one shot at matching those terms with their correct defnitions. Once they've matched all seven, I want to judge their response and, if incorrect, show them the correct matches, and if correct, have a little party in their honor.

Ideally, this would all happen on one page - one click of "Submit" and one judged reply. I don't want to have to use multiple questions where they aren't seeing all the terms and definitions all at once. Because these terms are all related (types of insurance) there's value in users being able to see the similarities and differences on one page.

Also - this isn't going to be used as a quiz question. I just happened to land on Quizmaker as the least bad option. I'm open to any other software/widget/add-on that's out there.

Thanks again for your help.

Hey John,

Thanks for clarifying exactly what you want to do. Matching Drag and Drop is all on one screen, so that might suit your need. And if you want to remove all of the "quiz" elements from the quiz, you don't have to have a results slide or you can customize it. And you can completely customize the Player Template to include/exclude any grading. You can also completely customize the feedback as well, or not even use feedback.

Have a look at this tutorial for some ideas:

Here's another option for you:

Are these ideas more on the right track? Let me know...

I actually started with the matching drag and drop. But I've found it a bit inflexible. For example, one of my definitions is 60 words long, all of which must be included, and the drag and drop can't accomodate that many characters. I haven't found a way to manipulate the images in the drag and drop. If I could, that interaction with the removal of the quiz elements would work.
