Quiz Finish Button and Branching

Oct 04, 2011

Dear All,

My e-learning contains quizes the users need to pass before they can proceed to the next slides. In case they fail the quiz they need to review the previous slides and then take the quiz again and again until they get it right.

The user is redirected to the previous slides and after reviewing the content returns to the quiz (how it should be). However: the user can only see the "Fail Result Slide"  and cannot restart the quiz. Tried already so many different settings - nothing works.

Question Properties are (there is only one question for the quiz):

Attempts permitted: Unlimited

QM Player Template Builder settings are:

- "Submit one question at a time" (which should not make a difference with one question in total)

- "Prompt to resume on quiz restart": enabled

Quiz Properties are:

When user passes, 'Finish' button: Goes to Next Slide

When user fails, 'Finish' button: Goes to 1. previous chapter

Allow user to leave quiz: After user has completed quiz

User may view slides after quiz: After passing quiz

User may attempt quiz: 3 times

Does anyone have an idea?

Thank you in advance.

Best regards,

HC

Hello Brian,

As I cannot record the published result: I have added some screenshots to explain what is happening (or not happening).

Pic 1: User completes slide 1

Pic 2: User is directed to slide 2 to perform quiz; selects a choice and submits.

Pic 3: as the choice was the wrong one the fail result is displayed; user can now "Retry Quiz" another 2 times.

Pic 4: having 3 times selected the wrong choice, user can only "Finish" the quiz and is directed back to slide 1 to review the content.

Pic 5: User reviews content and is directed back to the quiz. Until here everything is as expected.

Pic 6: once the user wants to retake the quiz, the is no more "Retry Quiz" option, but only the "Fail Result Slide" from the first attempt. Selecting "Finish" will get the user back to slide one and the user is stuck in a loop.

Thank you for looking into this.

Best regards,

HC

Hi HC,

Thanks for the screenshots.  I understand what you're trying to do.  Basically, you want to allow the end-user to attempt the quiz 3 times.  If they fail all 3 times, you direct them back to the content.  After they've reviewed the content, you want to allow them 3 more attempts.  Is that correct?  If so, Quizmaker doesn't currently support resetting the number of attempts on the quiz.  Thus, you'll need to set your attempts to "unlimited" and then direct the end-user to review the content.  There's no way to "force" the end-user back into the content in a way that allows the end-user to retake the quiz later on.

Hi Brian,

thank you for your reply. Your summary of what I'm trying to do is absolutely correct.

However: after another thousand try-and-error I found the solution and it works!

That means that the quiz is playing again, eventhough the user tried it already 3 times before and reviewed the previous slide.

The only deviation from my initial plan is the fact that when the user comes back to the quiz they only have one attempt and get it wrong again, they are sent back to the previous slide. This time they don't have 3 attempts. I can live with that.

  • User gives 3 times wrong answer (2 times "Retry Quiz" button) - user can only hit Finish Button
  • User is sent back to previous slide
  • User gets back to quiz
  • User gives once wrong answer (no "Retry Quiz" button) - user can only hit Finish Button
  • User is sent back to previous slide
  • User gives once wrong answer (no "Retry Quiz" button) - user can only hit Finish Button
  • and so on until user gives correct answer and gets to the next slide

Not sure if that is the trick: in the properties for the player in QM I have disabled "Prompt to resume on quiz restart".

In case anyone is interested I'm happy to summarize the settings here.

Best regards,

HC

That does in fact seem to be the difference. I had the same issue -- I need have my user branch to a set of slides if they fail the quiz, and then re-try. That was the only setting (Disabling "Prompt to resume on quiz restart" that allowed me to do this.
