Activating a "pause button" on a slide which stops the audio and slide progression should the learner be interrupted

Jul 14, 2015

I have successfully added next & pervious buttons as triggers, which work correctly.  However, I cannot find a trigger that would stop the audion and slide progression.  (Our LMS does not have that functionality either). Thanks for any and all support!

Thanks for responding. I am working with storyline 2. (Presentation was recorded in PPT and then imported into Storyline 2).

I can apply a trigger to "pause media". But the audio continues even when I click the "pause" button (in preview mode). It also did not work with Media: Audio 1 recorded. Can you recommend the settings that will cause this effect?

Also, since I have to add next, pause, and previous, as button on each slide, there should be a way to not have to set it up for each slide. If I try this in Storyline view, and preview, the prev/next buttons show up (as in the PPT) but they do not function as a trigger.

Hi Kathryn,

First, replying via email includes your signature here so you're welcome to edit the post and remove that information. Also it looks like you may have tried to attach something here - and you'll need to visit the forum page to share any attachments using the "add attachment" button.

It sounds like you're using the play/pause buttons that are a part of the player vs. a pause media trigger or pause timeline? It may help if you're able to share a copy of that .story file here so that we can take a look at what you've set up.

Thanks for your feedback & help!!

Programs that I have to develop are created in PPT w/audio, which I upload to storyline2. These will be posted on our LMS. Below is a snapshot of the slide where I'd like to add a functional "pause" button. I've tried a number of ways to cause the slide to pause. I've found that I need to delete in storyline view the next and prev button as they do not function at all. This may be due to the fact that I am not building programs from scratch in storyline2.

I also do not understand why, when previewing this slide (or others), I get menu , resources. Frankly, I just want to have the learner see just the content of the slide. Any remedies to suggest?

Again, thanks!

Hi Kathryn,

Replying via email includes your signature here but it doesn't upload any attachments or images you shared so I'm unable to see what you're working with.

Based on the first portion you mentioned, with the prev/next buttons not working, I'm curious if you're seeing that in Preview only? Have you confirmed that you're previewing more than just that one slide? Are you building in Powerpoint with Presenter enabled, or just solely Powerpoint? What type of audio files are you using in Powerpoint?  If you import a PowerPoint presentation with M4A audio files into Articulate Storyline, you may find that the audio files don't get imported.

This is a known issue. Storyline supports M4A files, but they're not currently importing from PowerPoint. You can work around this behavior by importing the M4A audio files into Storyline after importing your PowerPoint presentation. There are additional directions here on how to extract it from powerpoint.

As for the menu/notes - you can disable them on the player or within a slide by slide basis using the slide properties.

Hi Kathryn,

Thanks for sharing your file here.

First, you mentioned seeing the menu on some slides - and it was enabled as a part of the player along with the resources. Some of your slides had their slide properties adjusted to use "custom for this slide" and did not have the menu selected, so those were not showing it as expected. Looks like you'll just want to double check those settings from within the player and individual slide settings.

You mentioned the next/prev buttons not working, and that you had removed them and removed the associated triggers - so I'm not sure I'll be able to see the behavior you mentioned of how they were not working? It seems that a few of the slides are also set to advance automatically when the timeline ends, and that is working normally for me as well.

In regards to the play/pause - I see that Wendy was also helping you here. Since I wasn't able to see your previous image since it was a response via email, I'm unsure what slide to look at for that element, so hopefully Wendy's idea helped you out.

Hi all!  I wanted to provide an update here, as Storyline 2 Update 8 was just released, and included a number of fixes which you can see in the release notes available here.

The item you all may be particularly interested in is how it fixes an issue where M4A audio files in PowerPoint wouldn't be imported into Storyline. You can download the latest update here, and after downloading and installing the latest update you’ll want to republish any existing content to ensure that the updates and fixes are applied.
