Adding Quiz Questions while Watching a Video

Oct 25, 2023

Hello! I am trying to see if there is a way that I can add quiz questions that pop up during certain parts of a 10-minute long video. I haven't been able to find exactly what I am looking for. I am wondering if anyone has any thoughts? I am hoping to have something in which the video will pause at a certain point, the question pops up, the learner answers, receives question feedback, and then the video continues to play until the next question. Thank you!

I think the easiest thing to do would be to use a video editor to split your video up into segments then jump to your questions "when media completes".
If you don't have access to a decent editor, Blackmagic Design's DaVinci Resolve has a free version that is very robust and they provide some great tutorials.

Put all your instructions and folderol on a slide. When the learner is ready, have them take an action (like click) which advances to the next slide with the video. If the video starts when the slide timeline starts, you can use the slide timeline to control what happens.

So when the timeline reaches the appointed moment, pause the timeline, show layers with the questions and feedback. When that is done, hide those layers and resume the timeline until the next question.

Two things of which you must beware:

1. If you allow the learner to have video controls, they will use them, and throw off your timing. It is a trade off between you having control, and the learner having control, but since you want to stop the video, and you know when you want to stop it, it seems to me to be an easy decision.

2. If you allow the learner to click on the video, it will stop and throw off your timing.  Avoid this by covering the video with a shape that is filled, without outline, and set to 98% transparency.

Be aware that the jump to time trigger will allow you to skip backward or forward in the video. I think you want to play the video continuously, and at a certain point stop and show content outside of the video (ask questions) before continuing from the same spot in the video.  As such, I think Owen’s and my suggestions are what you want. Of the two, I would probably prefer Owen’s method.
