Articulate Storyline on network
Feb 01, 2016
This is a question for Articulate about using Articulate Storyline2 on a network.
I know that Articulate strongly advises against the use of network drives in combination with Articulate Storyline2. But our company is in the process of ending the use of fat-clients with local hard drive. Our clients no longer have access to local drives, only network drives are available.
Our IT department told me that in our data center we use VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure). In the data center the network storage is located next to the VDI, with a Gigabyte data connection. This is totally different from the classic data connection from a client to a network drive. They suggest that this is even faster than a PC connecting to its own local hard drive.
From this I understand that with a VDI data center, the risk of loss of data should be none, because there is no latency.
What is your opinion about this? Thank you!
Greetings,
Ferry

Hi Ferry!
Well, I know that latency is the potential issue when it comes to working on a network, which is why we do not offer support for this setup. I also know that we have customers that claim success in utilizing this environment, even though we cannot support it. So, if you are expecting no latency, perhaps you will not run into issue - but we do not currently support this type of environment.
Hopefully some other users will be able to chime in with their experience.
Leslie, thank you for your reply!

Some time has passed since I asked this question. Now there is Articulate 360. Is it possible to run Articulate 360 on a company network, or is this suppoprted by Articulate? Or is this basically the same as Articulate2. We don't have access to a local hard drive on our network.
Hi Ferry,
Applications such as Storyline, Engage, Quizmaker and Presenter would still need to be installed locally from Articulate 360.
Rise is entirely web based, so you could run that without worrying about installing on a network or local drive.
Does this thread mean to say that Storyline cannot function properly when a VDI environment is used?
Hello Tiffany!
Sorry if this thread is a bit confusing. We did mean to say the same thing.
We recommend local installs still. Will it work? It could, but we would not be able to support this set-up. Hope that clarifies a bit more for you.
I guess I meant the files themselves, as opposed to the install of software itself.
Hi Tiffany,
We also recommend that the .story files are created, edited and published locally. If you need to back up to a network/shared drive you can certainly do so!
By working with the project files on your local hard drive, you'll prevent loss of resources, file corruption, and other erratic behavior that can occur due to network latency.
Also, check out this article by Tom Kuhlmann for information and video instructions on using a couple of free applications that'll synchronize your local files with a network drive.
