Audio Files won't play simultaneously when triggered in Drag and Drop for Storyline 1

Nov 17, 2016

Hi,

I am a very new user. I've created a drag and drop where a "correct" sound plays when the state of an object is changed to drop correct and an "incorrect" sound plays when the state of an object is changed to drop incorrect.

However, if the user drags and drops an object before the audio sound of the previous object has finished playing (it's about one second long), the sound for the next object won't play. I can't figure out what I am missing.

Also, I have only tried it in preview mode and thought maybe that might be the issue.

Thanks in advance for any help and sorry to ask such a basic question!

Thank you so much! You guys are the best! I've copied the single slide into a separate file to protect IP so hopefully that won't cause any additional issues.

The other issue I haven't yet figured out how to fix that might trip you up is that objects only make the sound the first time they are drop correct/incorrect. I haven't yet figured out how to make the audio repeat if the same object is moved to the incorrect target twice. But that is a separate issue that I'm not sure there is a solution for.

Also, this drag and drop is just meant to be a review activity and is not graded/treated as a question at the moment.

Any other observations you have about things I am doing wrong are extremely welcome. There are still many fundamental things that I believe I still don't understand. (Please let me know if I've done the attachment wrong.) Thanks again for having a look!

Thanks for sharing your file, D K. And by the way, I would never know you were a new user by the way you set up your slide! Nicely done!

I took a peek into your file and did a little trial and error before I found a solution that worked. I ended up creating two layers on your slide: Correct and Incorrect. I put the audio files on those layers instead of on the base layer.

Then I modified the triggers you already set up to 'Show layer Correct when the state of any of the coins is Drop_Correct', and the same goes for incorrect.

I think this workaround also addresses your second question:

The other issue I haven't yet figured out how to fix that might trip you up is that objects only make the sound the first time they are drop correct/incorrect. I haven't yet figured out how to make the audio repeat if the same object is moved to the incorrect target twice. But that is a separate issue that I'm not sure there is a solution for.

Take a look at the attached file, and let me know what you think!

Thank you so much, Alyssa, for looking at the file and for your words of encouragement! Unfortunately, I'm still experiencing both issues when I test the new file in preview. I probably didn't explain the issues properly.

Regarding the first issue: you have to drag two correct answers very quickly in succession to the correct drop target in order to experience the problem because the audio is so short. If, for example, you drag 'salary' and 'regular pay' to the purple pig, try dragging and dropping the second object fast enough so that it lands on the target before the audio for the previous correct answer completes playing. (You have to do it really fast.) If you do that, the second object will disappear without making the 'cash register' sound.

Regarding the second issue: (this only occurs with incorrect drag and drops as the correctly targeted objects disappear and cannot be re-dragged to the same target.) So, for example, if you drag 'regular pay' to the blue pig, it will make a 'coin drop' sound and snap back to its original position. If, however, you drag 'regular pay' to the blue pig for a second time, it snaps back to position without making the 'coin drop' sound.

I'm so sorry if I did not explain this well the first time, or if this explanation is also unclear. I really appreciate any guidance you can give on this matter, but I also don't want to take up all of your time with this. Thanks again for all your help!

Also, if you are not experiencing these issues on your end, then maybe there is something I did wrong when viewing the file? I downloaded it and opened it directly from the browser toolbar. I also double-checked the file name to make sure it was the right one. Did I miss a step? (Like I said, I am very new!)

Hi again D K!

Thanks for your reply. I re-tested the file, and I was not able to reproduce the first issue you described, but then again, maybe I am not dragging the coins as fast as you are. :)

I was able to reproduce the second issue, so it seems like moving the audio to layers is not the complete fix you needed.

Hopefully some of your fellow community members will be able to chime in and offer some additional ideas here!

Hi DK,

Thanks for sharing that and I took a look at this. It's definitely something you have to do very fast - as the layer is fairly short, but it's expected based on you still dragging an item while the layer is open, it's not going to "reshow" the layer to play the audio again. The layer seems like the easiest way to trigger that audio - but if you think folks are going to be dragging them that fast and the audio is the indication of correct vs. incorrect -  you'll want to look at triggering each individual drop item based on where it's dropped.

With that being said - I had to do it a few times to get it to happen as we're talking 1-2 seconds. I can't imagine folks can be that fast at finding and dragging the items!
