Can't play course - Flash

Oct 25, 2017

Hello everyone,

from yesterday after publishing a project for web with Storyline 2 or 360 when I try to open the story.html file I am redirected straight away to the HTML5 version of the project. I tried to open the file with different browsers on Windows and even on Mac but every time I am redirected to the story_html5.html file.

A colleague tried as well to publish other projects on another machine and when she opens the story.html files, instead to be redirected to the HTML5 version, she get the following error:

Can't play course
For security reasons, Flash cannot access files on your computer's hard disk from your web browser.

Can someone help please?

Thanks!

Hello Alessandro,

Sorry to hear that you are having difficulty with your published output.

This article explains how Storyline determines which format of your content to display when learners view it.

The error that you shared above seems to indicate that your colleague is viewing the content locally and not in the intended environment.

When you view a Storyline 360 course on your local hard drive, you'll encounter security restrictions from the computer, web browser, Flash Player, and network that can cause various features of the course to fail. To test your published content and share it with others, it's best to upload it to a web server or LMS. See this article for details.

Hey Alessandro!

If you or your colleague are viewing the published output locally, as Leslie mentioned you'll likely run into issues with playback caused by many factors. For instance, if your Flash Player or Windows installed updates in the last couple weeks, that could be why you're running into this now.

To avoid this entirely, make sure you're uploading the published output to the web before viewing it. Tempshare is a great option, if you're needing a place to test your course on the web.

If you do need to run the content locally, check out this article for a few solutions that may help.

Hope that helps!

Hi Amy,

What browser are you using? It sounds like it may have Flash disabled or blocked, and based on the age of that article, they were all likely published as Flash first or Flash with HTML5. Luckily the files are still there in the download options, so you can access the .story files and use them in newer versions of Storyline too.
