Captions automatically get included when SL published as a video?

Feb 15, 2024

Hi, wondering if anyone has had the same problem.
Articulate 360:
"captions automatically get included in the published output"
I do not see CC for any audio tracks when SL is published as a video (works fine when published as SL - not so as SL video output)
Am I missing a trick here.
Thank you for any pointers.

Hi John!  Great question and I think someone asked the same question in this thread

By default, the closed captions added in the story file are not included when choosing to Publish to Video. But, if you create a trigger that sets the Player.Display.Captions to True on your first slide, that should help.

Hi Angela,
Many thanks for the reply. I read that thread, at the top it said there was a new update 12 months ago that "added captions automatically". Link in post above.

I had tried adding that player trigger but it didn't work.  Plus, I prefer the captions to toggle on only when the viewer decides they want to see them (like in SL), not automatically onscreen when video starts.

As a test, I did try a work-around, creating and re-importing the captions as .vtt files (laborious work, and not feasible if the course has many slides) but it was not a success. The captions appear in the middle of the bottom third of the video  and they obscure elements in the video. Plus they are white on a transparent background so forget them showing up on a slide with a white BG.

Back to the drawing board!
Thanks again for your pointers.

If anyone else is interested in this topic

1. SL Publish as video:
Choose "OPEN",  choosing "ZIP" does not save .vtt file with video
This bug(?) is being examined by Articulate 02/22/24

2. Default appearance of CC is white font on a transparent background.

Note:  Customized appearance of captions, at present, can only be achieved by the viewer/user changing  accessibility > captions  in their operating system/browser.
