CC Button Disables after Showing New Layer and Inconsistent Media Resume

Jun 03, 2022

Hello!

I'm very new to Articulate and have been working on an issue with a project for about a week now.

My current set up:

Slide has a "help" button function that shows a new layer(that has a narration) when the user clicks on it and pauses the base layer (with audio).

When the user clicks the "close slide" button on the help layer, the base layer reappears.

My issue:

The base layer reappears but the audio and custom closed caption button I created, no longer work or resume functionality after clicking on the help button and clsoing it out.

In my preview, the captioning toggles on and off just fine before clicking on the help button and closing it out. Then the captions stop showing up after clicking on the "cc" button.

I've gotten the audio to switch between layers but can't figure out the cc button issue.

I'm not sure if it's a bug or set up related issue but I have two asks:

1.) Is there an easier way to have the base layer completely pause (video and audio which are separate) when a new layer shows (with audio), then resume (video and audio) when the new layer is hidden?

2.) Is there a reason why the custom closed caption button I made stops functionality after a new layer is shown then hidden? Is there a way to fix it?

Thanks for any help!

Hi Doyin,

Sorry to hear that you ran into this issue.

The best way to pause the base layer using a slide layer is though the layer properties option 'Pause timeline of base layer'.

This automatically pauses the timeline layer of the base layer while the layer is active, and automatically resumes the base layer when the slide layer is closed.

Regarding your audio and closed caption issues, would you mind sharing a copy of your project file here so I can test it on my end? If you prefer to share your course in private, you can reach out to our support team here through a support case and share your file there.

Thanks for this response Joe! I've tried pausing base layer but found that it doesn't continue once I hide the layer.

As a heads up, there may be a lot of excessive triggers and variables since I've been trying to troubleshoot so please excuse the mess. Slides 1.2 and 1.3 are the slides I've been seeing the issue with (no other slides have the set up yet).

I've attached the file below.

Thanks again!

Hello Doyin,

Thanks for sharing your project file!

There were a lot of triggers in the affected slides and I didn't know which ones were the correct triggers that you wanted to keep so I ended up recreating all of the triggers in the slides. I've attached an edited version of Slide 1.2 which now automatically resumes the audio in the base layer when the help layer is closed. Let's use this file as a starting point, and then we can make changes to it as needed.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Thank you so much for this Joe! It's resolved! I went back in and deleted a bunch of triggers and found that everything is working perfectly now with less clutter.

I have one more question, I couldn't seem to find an exact answer online.

I've figured out how to toggle the sound on and off on the base/main layer.

Is there a way to ensure that the sound stays off when another layer is shown on the same slide(i.e. the help layer)?

I find that the audio will be muted but once I click on the help button, it resumes despite the sound button on the base layer being off.

Is Articulate also capable of allowing users to toggle sound through the entire project as opposed to per slide? Similar to how closed captions can be applied to the full project and toggled?  I'm using a custom button and not the player.

Thanks in advance once again!

Hi Doyin,

You can add a simple 'Stop media' trigger on your base layer to permanently stop your audio file from playing until you decide to resume playing it.

In the screenshot above, the instructions audio file will stop playing the moment your learner clicks on the 'Help' button, and will not resume once the layer is closed.

Your learners will also have the option of toggling audio on or off if you enable the volume option in player settings.

Click on the volume icon will mute all audio in the course.
