You can insert a new slide based on a template at any time, or you can create a new project based on an existing template. However, you would not be able to apply a template to an existing project.
Did you use a Slide Master for your skin in your original project? It sounds like you probably did not, but it's not too late to start using one now. You may just need to delete some elements from your existing slides, as they would exist on your Slide Master instead.

I would start a new project and import your slides from your project.
