Chrome - Getting Rid of Synchronous XHRs

Sep 25, 2020

Hi all,

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I've searched the forums for a glimpse into what other Storyline users thoughts are and actions taken. Here's the link:
https://developers.google.com/web/updates/2012/01/Getting-Rid-of-Synchronous-XHRs

It sounds like Chrome will be getting rid of this setting, so come January 2021, Chrome will no longer track user completion status. I hope I'm wrong, and read it incorrectly, but if I didn't, and others have a work around or solution, I'd love to hear it.

Thanks.

Hello Jason and welcome to E-Learning Heroes 😊

Thanks for reaching out! Google ended support for synchronous XHR in Chrome 80 when it was released in February 2020. You can learn more about this change here.

The good news is that your SCORM and Tin Can API (xAPI) courses aren't affected by this browser change. They'll continue to work normally.

However, your AICC courses could be impacted. Learner interactions that happen in the final few seconds before they close the browser tab might not get communicated to the LMS.

To fix this issue, we updated Storyline 360, Storyline 3, and Studio 360. Install the latest update for your authoring app and republish your AICC courses to ensure they work properly.

I'd also recommend checking with your LMS admin or provider to see if your LMS uses synchronous XHR so they can update your system if needed.

Hi Leslie and thank you for the reply.

Yes, we're aware this began with Chrome 80, and we enabled the setting in Chrome to ensure our courses work, because they didn't. Thankfully we have no AICC courses (everything is SCORM compliant). My concern is that come Jan 2021, this could be a larger issue.

We're talking to SAP (SuccessFactors) about this, to ensure they're aware.

I came across the linked article, and found this comment interesting. Thankfully it was called out before they made the change, carte blanche.
