Closed captioning generates a play button at the beginning of my courses

Dec 05, 2023

I have generated some Text-To-Speech narration on slide 2 of my course. Slide 1 has no narration. When I publish the course, the course runs from slide 1, and when you navigate to slide 2, the the narration begins. As expected.

However, if I the generate Closed Captions for the narration on slide 2, the published version of the course begins on a black screen with a big start button on it (see below). This occurs if the narration is on slide 2, or slide 52. Storyline treats the course similar to a video.

If I delete the Closed Captions, the big start button goes away.

Is there some way to disable the big start button, and still retain the closed captions?

Hi Everyone!

I'm happy to share that we just released Storyline 360 (Build 3.83.31444.0) which includes the fix for the bug where a play button shows even if there is no media file on the first slide and there is a closed caption file.

Now all you need to do is update Storyline 360 in your Articulate 360 desktop app to take advantage of the newest bug fixes and features!

If you run into any issues, please don't hesitate to reach out to our team by submitting a support case.

I have experienced the same issue. In my case the one and only video appears on slide 25,  has audio and we need to include closed captioning to be fully accessible.

Without captions, when previewed / published the course begins with the appropriate start splash page as expected.

However with captions the big video start button appears as indicated in the previous post. In pressing the start button the video does not play but rather triggers the start of the correct page 1 splash page.

I have experimented with changing the players, and also created a trigger on the first slide to disable captions which was previously suggested - none of this has not solved problem.

I have an identical course completed earlier in a different language and this issue is not present with everything working as it should.  I am using the latest version of storyline 32.

Hello All,

I wanted to share that we are currently tracking a known issue where a play button shows even if there is no media file on the first slide and there is closed captions present in the slide. One workaround is to downgrade your installation to Storyline 360 Update 81

I've added this community post to the bug report so we can notify everyone subscribed to this thread as soon as a fix is released, and we're very sorry for any inconvenience this bug may have caused!

Hello Nelly,

Happy to look into this for you!

Here's a test file that I created which has a video with closed captions placed in the second slide. When I published the course to Review 360, I observed that it immediately opened for me with no play button appearing when the course loaded.

Since you're getting different results with your project file, would you be willing to share a copy of your project file here or in private by opening a support case so we can check what's happening? We'll delete it when we're done testing!
