I am having a great deal of difficulty with my assessment questions. I am asking learners to type in a text entry and then click on a hotspot to move to the next slide and this is not working. I have it working on other slides, so I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I have attached a screenshot of my slide. Also, I have added a trigger so that the 'Try Again' layer shows when the learner clicks outside the text entry box and the hotspot. As soon as the learner clicks into the text entry box, the try again layer is shown. Please can anyone help me. Many thanks. Linda Welch

Hi all, thank you so much for your help. My assessment is almost working ok now. However, when I reset the slide properties to 'reset to initial state' , the learner is unable to complete the question again, the hotspots do not seem to be working as they should. They are taken back into the question, but the original data is still there. I am sure it is me who is doing something wrong. Please can anyone help. Kind regards Linda.
The summary slide is only accessed at the end of the assessment, so it is not being revisited, is this the problem. Shall I make it a link at the start of the assessment as well, then when the learner revisits at the end, the action should work. Is that correct? many thanks.
Hi Linda!
Do you have "Reset to Initial State" set to all the slides? A quick way to do this is by selecting all the slides and changing the slide properties! Here's what it looks like.
If that's not the case, would you mind sharing the updated file?
Thank you for this, I will try it out and let you know. I am on annual leave now until after Christmas, so might be a while getting back to you. Thank you so much for your help. Kind regards Linda
Hi Lauren, I have updated all the slides as you have said, and the retry is working. However, the questions still retain the text entry data that the learner has entered in the previous attempt at the question. Also a big problem is that when they retry the question again, it goes onto the next question. How do I set it to return to the summary page on the second attempt? Thank you so much for your help with this. I have sent the updated file.
I have tried this again with the correct slide returning to the summary slide and this works fine after the retry. However, the state of the button does not change to Completed after the retry although the trigger on the correct layer button is asking the state of the question button to change to completed. Help! Thank you.
Hi Linda,
Thanks for sharing your updated file.
I wanted to verify that you are referring to the buttons on Slide 13.1, correct?
Is the status of the button changing to visited?
Hi Leslie, the buttons on the Summary slide should go to 'completed' if the question is answered correctly. If the question is not answered correctly, the button should go to the state of 'Failed'. This is working ok, but once the learner has retried the question and answered correctly, the state of completed is not showing. Once the learner has answered the question correctly, the button on the correct layer, should turn the state of the button to completed, but that doesn't seem to happen on the retry, I am not sure why, or how to correct this. This is my first Storyline assessment, and I don't think I have constructed it correctly, but it is a bit late to change it all now. I would be really grateful for some help with this. Many thanks.
Hi Linda
try resetting the variable QuestionxFail back to false when the user clicks on the summary page to retry a question. Make sure the trigger is above the 'jump to slide' trigger. This trigger will need to be added to each question button.
Hi Wendy, thank you very much for this. I will try this and let you know how I get on. Thank you. Kind regards, Linda
Hi Wendy, this has worked perfectly, thank you! The only issue I have now is that when a question is retried, the original data that the learner has input in the text entry box is retained. To be honest, I think it is ok like that, but it would be nice if the question was blank and the learner could retry it from scratch. Do you know if this is possible. Many thanks. Linda
Hi Linda
that's great news. Change the slide revisit option to 'reset to initial state' and that should do it.
Hi Wendy, all my slides are set to 'reset to initial state' as I was advised earlier, this does enable the question to be retried, but does not clear the data that the learner initially input in their first attempt in the text entry fields in the questions. Its a bit odd really. Thank you.
Ah sorry Linda - the text entry fields are variables so you would need to set each one back to blank
You could do that on the same button where you adjust the questionfailed back to false.
Again make sure that trigger is above the jump to slide trigger...
Hi Wendy, yes of course I understand. Thank you for your help with this, I think I am just about there now. I will let you know when its all running correctly. Many thanks, kind regards Linda
I would add a button below the text box called "Clear" or "Reset" that has a trigger to blank the variable. This way the user can decide without losing what they typed.
Hi Phil, thank you for this, I will try that to see if it is useful.
Just to say thank you everybody for the help with this. My assessment is up and running correctly. I have learned lots from you, so many thanks. I am sure I will be contacting you again in the near future! Kind regards Linda
Well done Linda - so glad you got it working and all the best with your project:-)
