Course not being marked as complete

Nov 09, 2021

We have a course made on storyline 360 that I've published and a client has uploaded on to their own LMS (Learning Pool). They have uploaded other courses of ours and had no problems but for some reason this one is not marking as complete. They have also said that one learner has been marked as 'failed' which as far as I understand should not be possible.

Basically the course (and all our courses) ends with a quiz and once they pass they can click 'next' on the results slide which takes them to a slide where they press 'exit course' which triggers the course to mark as passed/complete. There's no trigger to mark it as failed, they just can't complete the course.

I've uploaded the file onto SCORM cloud and it's working fine ie being marked as passed and complete - I've also checked this happens when I fail the course and have to retake.

Other users have added the course onto their own LMS and we've not had any other issues reported.

They have said that they have checked with their LMS (Learning Pool) and there shouldn't be any issues on their end - but there also don't appear to be any on ours.

Any ideas of what could be going wrong?

Hi Lauren

Learning pool came back to the user and said

"The user is actually showing a status of “failed” directly from the E-learning which I am afraid would not mark on the LMS. If this is not updating on a new attempt, I am afraid this would be controlled by the content rather than the LMS."

They seem pretty confident it's not an issue on their end but the file shouldn't show a status of 'failed' at any point so I'm very confused

Follow up from user - the problem seems to be when someone fails the quiz and retakes it. She also mentioned that when the quiz resumes it jumps to question 2 no matter what question they were on when they exited. So I'm assuming the issue is something to do with how their LMS is interacting with the quiz?

Hello Rachel,

Thanks for popping back in with additional information. Your original post above mentioned a slide where they press 'exit course,' which triggers the course to mark as passed/complete.  Passed/Complete is not an available reporting option, so I'm curious if you're using: Passed/Incomplete or Passed/Failed?

Regarding your second mention of where the content resumes, this sounds like the SCORM Suspend Data may be affecting this behavior. Which LMS Standard did you publish to?

Thanks for that information, Rachel.

The articles I shared above provide the answers to both of your issues, but I'll summarize:

  • Passed/Incomplete AND Passed/Failed are most likely to record both completion and success statuses in your LMS.
    • Have you tried Completed/Incomplete?
  • SCORM 1.2 has a character limit of 4,096.
    • Publishing to SCORM 2004 3rd Edition or 4th Edition will increase this limit to 64,000
