Course will only play audio, no visuals once uploaded to LMS - Why?

May 03, 2018

Currently when previewing or testing in Chrome, the course loads with menu/player and recorded audio - but the player screen is blank? My text, videos, pictures and even background template are all missing?

Upon testing this in FireFox, the course runs smoothly!? Once changing a proxy setting in IE, I was able to view. But this didn't work with Chrome.

My course was originally working on our LMS (in Chrome) with audio & visuals during testing, BEFORE I updated it with animation. I'm not sure if this is the reason why it is no longer working, or what the cause could be?

Anyone experience this and have a work around? I have a tight deadline to launch date, and am at a loss after months of work on to this project. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi Heather,

I haven't heard of a course not playing back the slide elements after adding animations, and that only happens in Chrome. It sounds fairly unique - but let's start with some general info to troubleshoot further!

  • What version and update of Storyline are you using? Has this changed since the published that worked?
  • What version of Chrome are you viewing the courses in? Has this changed since the published that worked?
  • Do you know if you're viewing Flash or HTML5 in Chrome? If you published for both, it would help to see how it behaves if you enable/disable the Flash plugin in Chrome.
  • Can you test uploading that course to another server or LMS? Scorm Cloud is a good, free example (up to 100mb).

Let me know when you can answers to the above, and if you're able to share a link to that course or even a copy of your .story file here we can take a look!

HI Ashley,

In hopes I could 'reset' or 'update' my software, I updated my Storyline version again. Please find my answers to your questions below, NOTING that since retesting, I'm now seeing all visuals on player, but NO sound is playing now for my course?

  • What version and update of Storyline are you using?
    • Storyline 2 (updated May 2017)
  • Has this changed since the published that worked?
    • I had uploaded a version since the update
  • What version of Chrome are you viewing the courses in?
    • Chrome 66.0.3359.139
  • Has this changed since the published that worked?
    • Possibly? My laptop crashed over a month ago, and everything had to be reset
  • Do you know if you're viewing Flash or HTML5 in Chrome? If you published for both, it would help to see how it behaves if you enable/disable the Flash plugin in Chrome.
    • I've had our IS team log-in to my computer to check proxy settings, etc. My help ticket with our LMS provider, gave me link to check 'plug-ins'. This test in Chrome appears to show Flash & Java versions disabled?
  • Can you test uploading that course to another server or LMS? Scorm Cloud is a good, free example (up to 100mb).
    • Thank you for this suggestion - I've tried it, however just as on my LMS platform, using my first SCORM version, there's no visual (but is audio); and newest update today with visual (no audio).

Lastly, I've included the .story file output, which runs fine in IE, but hiccups in Chrome.

Any expert advise is extremely appreciated!

Thx, Heather

Hi Heather,

I can't access the course with the link you shared, I'd need the actual link on your LMS.

It sounds like you may be running into the issue detailed here where Chrome has prevented autoplay of media in the latest update. Our team is working on a content updater for Storyline 2 and we'll let you know as soon as that's ready!  If everything is working outside of Chrome, it sounds like that would explain the issue you're running into.

If you're still having trouble in other browsers and even beyond the autoplay of media in Chrome, can you share your .story file (the file prior to publish) so that I can take a look?

Hi Heather,

I know - I wish I had an ETA to share, but the team is actively working on it, so we'll let you know as soon as possible when it's ready.

In the meantime, Chrome did roll back part of their autoplay behavior, audio only. It's temporary till October 2018, but you'll be ready with the update to Storyline 2 and the content updater!
