Documents not accessible when published and only certain external web link not working

Sep 09, 2016

Hi , I', tearing my hair out and hoping someone may help, I basically have two problems. When I create a trigger to link to websites three of the four work and the fourth doesn't. Yet when I test it using Storyline' test link' everything is fine (it also works when I copy and paste the URL into a different browser window). I have checked and the Url is on a secure site so I made sure to include the 's' in https://  has anyone had this problem too?

My second problem is that I have a PDF that I want to link to on my external hard drive. I pointed the link to that specific PDF located in a 'documents' folder in the same folder that my .stry file is located. I've read through previous discussion and people say that when published the PDF gets packaged up in a folder called 'external links inside the contents folder. However this doesn't happen for me. Please can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Thank you,

Jenny

Hi Jenny,

Welcome to heroes, thanks for taking the time to reach out to us here! What environment are you publishing for and how are you viewing the course when you're testing the published output? If you open an Articulate Storyline course from your local hard drive, you'll encounter security restrictions from the computer, web browser, Flash Player, and network that'll cause various features of your content to fail. To properly test your published content and share it with others, make sure to upload it to the environment for which it was published. For instance, if you're using Publish for Web you'll want to upload the published output to a web environment, such as tempshare, to properly test it.

If you're viewing the published content in it's intended environment and still seeing this behavior would you mind sharing your .story project file here? You can add it as an attachment right to a comment in this thread. Thanks! :)

Thank You Ali,

Yes I published the project to Html and then uploaded it into tempshare, so in my mind I am publishing it to it's intended environment. I just wondered if it was a problem of the file path being too long i.e. the zipped contents file is in a folder within three other levels if folders and of course publishing it wraps it up in another folder.

I've attached my .story file,

Thanks for your help,

jenny

Hi Jenny! Thanks for the additional info. If you attached your course via email, it doesn't carry over to the thread. You're welcome to pop by here and add it as an attachment to a comment right in this thread itself. I also wanted to let you know that when you reply via email, your signature is included in the comment. You're also welcome to edit that info out if necessary when you stop in to share your file.

Hi Jenny- I was able to see what you're saying with the PDF not working in your course. I went ahead and opened a case for you with our support engineers (#00886389). They'll be reaching out to you via email shortly to investigate further. I'll be following along and will relay info here for anyone who may find it helpful. :)

Also, just to verify- The first issue that you described with the link to a website, which website link were you referring to? Thanks!

Jenny Aleksandrowicz

Hi Ali,

The links I'm having trouble with is the top link on Pg8 of section 4 (green coloured slide).

I have re-done this link and put it in it's own text box, I think this may have worked but still need to test it.I will let you know as soon As I find out. Is there a limit to the number of links you can put in a text box?

Thank you for helping me with all this,

Jenny?

Hi Ali,

I have solved the problems. I think the problem was that I had several link in the same textbox and was putting the trigger (jump to Url) on the text itself. Instead I separated the text out into separate text boxes and put the (jump to Url) trigger on the text box itself.  This worked for both external links and links to my saved documents.
