Editing States

I have an annoying little issue that I can't seem to work out. I want to have an arrow within a box. When the user clicks on the box they see the layer that I assign and when they close the layer the arrow has changed to a tick. To do this I have to have to edit the state from arrow to tick. This is the part that stumps me. How can I change the image when I cannot add an alternative image as a 'visited' state? What am I doing wrong? I know it will be simple, hopefully as simple as I am being with this issue :). Thanks in advance. Tony
