I'm sorry to hear about the error message you received. I'd first want to check that you're working on local project files as described here. If you're using Storyline 2, there is also the auto recovery feature you may want to ensure you're using so that if Storyline closes unexpectedly it's saved.
I haven't seen the additional message about the volume being altered, and I'd be curious to know if there was a video or audio element to your file that was altered outside Storyline but linked or embedded into the .story file?
