Fill in the blank graded/feedback

Aug 14, 2014

I have a slide that is "Fill in the blank". The participant listens to a stimuli (on an Audio layer) and types in the response. From there, we want feedback given: correct/incorrect and the stimulus played again. The problem is the base layer (despite being selected to hide) is not hidden during the feedback.

Hi Virginia,

Sorry I didn't get back to this on Friday. I took a look at your course, and saw some odd behavior in that the base layer objects disappear towards the end of the timeline while on the correct/incorrect layer - even though there isn't anything set to make them disappear. Also, since the base layer objects are not hidden while on the audio layer - and that layer is set to show above the others, I think that's where some of the issue is occurring. I'm curious to know about the set up of having the audio on the layer - is there a reason it can't be on the base layer?

Hi, Ashley,

The Audio is presented for both the base and feedback layers, thus to keep the file size down we added an "Audio" layer.

I'm not sure why the base layer isn't disappearing because every other slide where we have the same commands, it does. I've tried to add variables to see if that would be another avenue, but I'm having no luck. If I remove the command to call the "Audio" layer during feedback, the problem is gone. Please note, I am not using Update 6. It caused 24+ question banks to become corrupt. Perhaps this is an issue resolved in the update, but I do not have the time and resources to rebuilding those question banks with 6.
Update: Just tried to add a "Play" button to a feedback screen. The base layer then appears. So weird!

Hi Virginia,

You mentioned you're not using Update 6 - what update are you using? All the fixes are detailed here in the release notes. Also, corruption issues are generally associated with working on your files off a network or USB drive, which may also explain the odd behavior with the base layer elements remaining on the individual layers and then disappearing right at the end of the timeline.

Can you check into that and let me know if that may be an issue associated with your course too?

When they were created initially, they were on a shared network; however, they have been on a local since I learned the error of our ways. I am using Update 5 and even tried creating new slides to "battle" the issue. I have had no luck (and now I'm not receiving notices that you responded--so apologies for the late reply) with variables, commands or any other strategy.

Hi Virginia,

Have you tried in a brand new file that is on your local drive? Sometimes the network drive/USB issues linger in the background and even after you've moved it to a local drive it could still cause issues. Also, are you able to download Update 6? It's always best to work on the newest update as a number of fixes and improvements are included.

As far as receiving notifications - each time you reply in a thread you have to resubscribe to that thread - you'll see it at the very top right corner of the thread where it says "Subscribe to replies" that way you'll get email notifications.

When I create a new slide in the program, fresh from opening, it has the same issue. I'll try to go back to the update and see if it works. I had to go back to Update 5 because of the corruption of our previous files. Question, if I import question banks into a new program, will they also be corrupted or will they be fine?

Virginia Driscoll

I've found a way to make it work. On the feedback layers, you can add audio. I am willing to sacrifice size in this case to make it work faster (it will triple those slides). Thanks for all of your help, Ashley! And I've gone back to Update 5 so we can get everything finished and functional before I update again.

Thanks Virginia for the additional information - and I'm happy to hear you found a solution that'll work for you. If you're able to share the new file you created (once you're done getting this one up and running!) we're happy to take a look again as that'll help us narrow down if there is something else specific happening in the file.
