Following 'crash' Storyline file will not open.

Jul 03, 2013

Whilst amending a Storyline file I attempted to publish the file, after a period of time Storyline stopped responding (not having published any content), I quit the application thru Task Manager and tried to re-open the file and now receive the following message:

'File cannot be opened it may have been created in a later version of Storyline'

Any help would be appreciated to avoid me having to revert to the backup of the file that I obviously created in case of such an event like this!

HI there Neil,

Have you tried restarting the machine? Sometimes that can clear up the issue if the software or the file caused a crash.

Also, I'm concerned with the fact that it locked up while publishing in the first place. Please make sure you're working with local files:

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names (this includes spaces and underscores).

Additional information regarding "Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces" in Windows operating systems can be found in the following Microsoft article.

If you continue to see that error, are you able to try importing the course into a new one, or do you see the same error? If you need information on how to go about doing this, please take a look at this tutorial.

If you still see that error, please let me know.

Thanks!

Hi Neil,

Shoot! So sorry to hear that. I had hoped that would fix the problem for you.

If you run into this error continuously, just let me know - it's never fun to recreate a project! Hopefully if it comes up again we can find the cause of the issue and keep it from happening again.

Thanks and have a great day!
