Help determining how a storyline file was published

Jan 02, 2021

Happy New Year everyone! I have some previously created (by a dev that I can no longer get in touch with) Storyline files that I need to understand how they were published. Is there a way by looking at the .zip file to determine the publishing selections? I can't seem to duplicate the exact settings to republish them. Thanks in advance.

Hi Joe,

Yes, you can unzip the file, or navigate into the zip folder and view the files that are located there. If the folder has a .swf file with no HTML5 file, then it was published for flash. If it has a .html file, then is was published with the ability to run in HTML5. Some files that were published primarily for flash though, may not play well in .html 5.

I would suggest that the best way to test it is to:

  1. Disable flash in your browser
  2. Unzip the project file in a new folder
  3. Run story.html file in that folder, to see if the project plays.

If the project plays, then it will run in HTML5. Next, continue to run the project to see if it runs as expected.

If the project was published for an LMS, you may also want to test it in ScormCloud to test the LMS functions.

Do you have the original .story files? If you do, your best option might be to just republish it in the updated Storyline app.

Thank you Dave for your reply. The problem that I am having is all of my older files that had already been published are working in my Learndash site. Anything new that I publish is not giving course credit once the user has completed. There is some new disconnect with newly published files and I can not figure out what it is. It is driving me crazy!

The files give the credit is ScormCloud but not on my website. I am so lost.
