Hover over function not working in published course.

Jul 25, 2017

Hello people,

Im having an issue with the hover over function in my published courses.

As you can see i am highlighting text and using it as a trigger to reveal a layer when the text is hovered over. This works fine in preview but not when published. Im working locally and viewing the course in its correct place (eg. published for web viewed in Tempshare or on a server).  Interactions that require a mouse click work fine, hover overs do not.  These used work in previous published iterations of the course so i have no idea whats happened. Any ideas?

Hey Patrick,

That's definitely odd- I'm sorry that it's causing problems! Thanks for those details and including that screenshot.

It sounds like you're doing all the right things here, so I'm a bit curious as to what could be going on. Can you share your .story project file here so I can take a closer look and do some testing? You can add it right to a comment using the "Add Attachment" feature in the comment box.

Thanks again!

Hi Ali,

Thanks for the reply. Yes ill send it on to you when i get to work. Something that may be helpful, the interactions work when published for CD and launched using the .exe file. It seems to be specific to publish for web. The fact that they were working in a finished course that was up on a server and being used and then stopped made me think it was a server (s3 in this case) issue but when i republished and tried again they still weren't working. Another thing, the hovers work fine with objects, just not highlighted text.

Thanks for sharing your published output with me, Patrick!

I uploaded it to Tempshare, and I'm able to see what you're describing when I view the HTML5 output. The Flash output appears to work as designed, however. Here's your course on Tempshare, and I also made a quick screen recording of the flash output where it's working correctly here

This sounds similar to an issue that's on our radar for Storyline 2 but I'd like to take a look at your unpublished project file itself to confirm. Would you mind sharing it here?

Thanks for that, Patrick! I was able to confirm that this is the issue I mentioned above for Storyline 2.

There are a couple workarounds currently that may help you:

  • Set trigger timing to "when user clicks"
  • Use a hotspot over the hyperlinked text for the trigger

We’ll continue to keep an eye on it to evaluate how many customers are impacted and what impact it has on courses. The number of customers and depth of impact are two of the elements that help us prioritize bugs and fixes.

Here's some more detail about how we tackle bugs.  I've added this discussion to our report for this so you'll receive notifications if we have any news to share. I'm really sorry that I can't say if this issue will be fixed, but you're in the right place to stay updated on this bug's progress.

Thanks again for letting us know you're hitting this- I'm sorry it's been causing headaches!
