How to force a learner to click a button

There are several ways to do this, but I was hoping someone could sort out an elegant solution...
I have a slide with a button to an external pdf. I want to prevent the learner from proceeding to the next slide until the pdf is opened.
One way is to use a True/False variable, set it true when the button is clicked for the external pdf. Don't allow the NEXT button to proceed unless the True condition is met.
Slicker might be to hide the Next / Prev buttons, and render them after the pdf is opened. Is this possible?
Is there a better solution?

Is it possible to dedicate a slide which will render the pdf in-slide without having to construct an external Web Object to hold the pdf?

Hi Sam,
When you are inserting the web object, are you presented with the box below. You'll see I have it selected to show web object in slide.
Does this help solve your issue of ensuring they open the PDF as well since it will be displayed for them automatically?
