How to open .story examples?

Aug 21, 2015

I am reading these discussions to learn how to get started in Storyline but am never able to open any examples in the format .story.  All I get are dozens of pages of random symbols such as these:

Sorry, forgot to mention I've already downloaded, and paid for, Storyline. I've tried many of the functions, made some slides, tried redesigning the feedback slides, fiddled around with triggers, layers and states, watched about 30 videos on Youtube, etc. Still can't open the .story files on the Articulate site.

Hi Wendy,

Thanks for your reply. I clicked on some .story files and was instantly sent to an html page with symbols similar to the ones in my original post. Is it possible that some files are too old (over three years) and no longer compatible with the lastest version of Storyline? Here is one page I visited recently: https://community.articulate.com/discussions/articulate-storyline/adding-feedback-to-drag-and-drop-without-submit-button-or-player. The file "draganddrop.story" gives me gibberish whether I click once, or twice, or right-click and save.

Hi Joseph,

I'm still able to access older .story files from our sites, and I've attached the .story file from that thread here again.  As Wendy mentioned you'll want to download the file and then you can look at changing it to a .story file to ensure it'll open correctly.

Hello Josh,

Thank you for reaching out and sharing what you are working on.

I'm curious if you've installed Storyline 360, part of your Articulate 360 subscription. This is the software needed to use a .story file you've downloaded.

You have a few options to open the file once it's downloaded:

  1. Open with from your file explorer:
  2. Open from within Storyline 360:
  3. Open when another project is open:

Please let us know if you have any further questions.
