I can't get Test Mode to work properly
Feb 26, 2015
Hi, Folks. This is probably a beginner's mistake, but I can't make Test mode work the way I want. Here's what I did:
1. Recorded a video of several steps.
2. Inserted it as "Test Mode". Only 3 of the screens were created as Hotspot quiz slides.
3. When I play the scene, it plays straight through. It's very confusing to understand when it wants a random click.
What I wanted was:
1. Paused video, click on correct tab to begin.
2. Video advances to next step.
3. Click and advance again, etc.
What am I doing wrong? I've read all the articles, and nothing addresses this basic problem. My scene as Storyline 2 created it is attached.
Thank you!

Hi Marie,
Your slide properties are set up to advance automatically - you'll want to change that to "advance by user" and then it'll advance based on how the user has interaction with the slide and what they've clicked on. For more about how to adjust the slide properties, please review the information here.
Hi, Ashley
Thanks for looking at this. The problem is that Storyline is creating these slides with no interactions. Of the series, most were created with no interactions (hotspots). Only 3 slides of the whole series had a quiz slide created.
Is this a bug?
Hi Marie,
First, I wanted to share a reminder that reply via email includes your signature here in the forums - and you're welcome to edit the post if you'd like to remove that information.
In regards to what is captured, I see the first slide 1.9 shows the hotspot interaction. It may be how this piece of software communicates with Storyline - and as a good test, you could try to capture something innocuous like a Word document and navigating around that. Also, if this is a web based software - what browser are you using to capture the information? I'd recommend Internet Explorer as browser like Chrome have some known limitations capturing data.
Thanks, Ashley. This is a web based software and I'm using Internet Explorer. Storyline correctly captured the "Click and drag" interactions on the tabs when I set it to Try It mode, but it failed to include these interactions when I inserted the same video as "Test" mode.
I'm really puzzled over Storyline's inconsistent behavior. Has anyone else had these problems?
Thanks for your help. I'll keep testing.
Hello Marie!
Click-and-drag events—such as dragging a scroll bar—aren't interactive in step-by-step screen recordings.
However, other actions—like clicking and typing—are interactive, so you'll be able to test learners on these actions.
Hope this helps.
