I can´t remove shadow from text

Jul 13, 2016

Hi, many captions in my project have a shadow that I can´t remove. Why?

I don´t want to apply the format brush (from a non-shadow text) because it would erase the bold format in some words. Thanks.

Hello Everyone!

I wanted to share some great news! We are no longer seeing the bug that caused shadows on captions to display even though the shadow setting was turned off in the default format.

Please make sure that you are using the current version of Storyline 360 (Build 3.77.30568.0). This guide walks you through installing, updating, and opening Articulate 360 apps.

Please let us know if you're still encountering the issue and we'd be happy to continue troubleshooting with you in a support case.

If it helps anyone, or Articulate tracking this problem down and solving it!!! In my case the persistent text shadow was tied to the bolded text on my button (all the text on my button was bolded). I had created a button, and at some point of tweaking added the text shadow; never again until Articulate fixes this! However, I was able to remove the shadow from the Normal state by highlighting the text and selecting the Text Shadow off, but this did not change the Hover or other states I had, nor could I get the shadow to turn off in the other states. Note, the Text Shadow acts a bit different if you have just the button selected, solid outline, or the text selected, dashed outline. I found out after trying different sequences, that if I went into Edit States, selected Hover state, highlighted all text on the button and turned the Bold off, then selected the Text Shadow on, then off, then reapplied the Bold text ... no more text shadow in the Hover state. Just turning the Bold on and off did not clear the text shadow, I had to turn all the bold off, select Text Shadow on and then off, then reapply the Bold ... I cannot say this will work for your case but might be worth playing around with if you are desperate until Articulate fixes this ... Cheers.

Ya'll will laugh at this. Articulate sends an email asking how likely I am
to recommend their software. My reply:

"Not likely.

You don't fix bugs, you don't offer any legitimate support, and you charge
a ridiculous price from something that is essentially PowerPoint Plus."

I was almost immediately contacted by the company asking me to elaborate,
to which I replied:

"Attached is the beginning of a thread on elearning heros. I could attach a
dozen or more. This sort of thing is commonplace with Storyline, and
elearning heros is loaded with examples. I suggest you do your own
research..."

The thread I attached was this one. They seem SHOCKED that such things
occur here - even though an Articulate employee is part of this thread!

Of course, they assure me they'll get to the bottom of it! This thread is
already YEARS old. Not holding my breath...

Doesn't seem to be fixed because I'm still having this issue. Text has shadow on it and button is clicked on, but I can't unclick it even though all the other buttons (bold, italics, underline, etc.) work just fine. This is driving me crazy and I'm really starting to dislike how glitchy this program is. Have never had issues like the ones I'm having now with any Adobe products. And yes, I have the latest updates.

Dave Howard

YES. This is a holdover from Articulate’s initial deal with Microsoft to use the PowerPoint 200X toolset.
There is no more shadow in PowerPoint. Even Microsoft knew by 2013 that it was garbage that nobody wanted.

Thanks Articulate!

Hi Gary,

Thanks for reaching out! I understand you are seeing the shadow on text in a text box even though you have disabled it. This bug was resolved with the latest update of Storyline (Build 3.77.30568.0). Would you be able to update Storyline on your end and see if the issue still persists? Here is a tutorial on how to update your apps.

I hope this helps and I look forward to your response!

Quick hack fix. Format paint original shapes from a newly created one.

This works on buttons/shape and with many states and instead of replacing all shapes.

  • Copy text "ONLY" from original shape (select text not box, right click, copy) >
  • Paste text only. Right click away from object (use storyboard area outside of slide)  and Paste: "KEEP TEXT ONLY" option >
  • Format NEW shape font size, font color, and shape color manually (don't format paint it and don't worry about states) >
  • NOW you can "FORMAT PAINT" the original shapes from new shape.
  • It should keep state colors and formatting. May have to adjust state colors but I didn't have to.

For some reason shapes keep the shadow if used before and turned off. It doesn't matter if you did it on text or shape, it keeps it. You cant turn it off. THIS IS A BUG that should have been addressed a LONG LONG TIME AGO>

Happy formatting and I hope this helps someone! ;)

Hi Gavin,

Thanks for reaching out!

I'm sorry to hear that you're still experiencing this issue, but I'm glad the quick fix Earl posted is helpful. If you're comfortable sharing your file with us, I'd be happy to take a closer look at what's going on. You can upload it here or share it privately in a support case. We'll delete it from our systems once troubleshooting is complete!

Hi, Steven:

I'm having this problem in a project I inherited. In the attached, you can see the light gray shadow, even though the shadow setting is turned off. If I turn on the Shadow, the List numbers become shadowed; if I turn off the Shadow, the list numbers lose the shadow but the text doesn't, as you see here.

Thank you!

Hi Ellen,

Thanks so much for reaching out! Happy to pop in! Have you had a chance to try Earl's workaround? Do you notice any difference in the Shadow?

I'd like to take a closer look at your .story file. Feel free to upload to this thread or privately in a support case

Looking forward to hearing from you! ✨

Hi Adrienne!

I'm sorry to hear this issue has been so persistent for you. I'd be happy to help!

Thanks for sharing which version of Storyline 360 you are currently using. If you've already tried the workarounds offered earlier in the thread and are still unsuccessful, I'd be happy to take a closer look at your .story file and investigate further!

Feel free to attach a copy here in the discussion or privately through a support case. We'll remove it from our system as soon as troubleshooting is complete!
