I can't rename variables in Storyline 2
Oct 03, 2014
When I create a results slide in Storyline 2, the four variables are created, but I am not able to rename them. I was able to rename them in Storyline 1. Is this a bug in S2?
The courses that I am creating have at least 3 quizzes each, with most of them having 6 to 8. It helped a lot to be able to rename the variables so that I could keep track of which variables belonged to each quiz. If I can't rename them, then they are just called Results..., Results1..., Results2..., etc. It's much more difficult to keep track without a descriptive name.

Hi Laura and welcome to Heroes!
I do see that our team has confirmed that you are unable to rename variables in SL2 (even though this was possible in SL1). I don't see an indication as if this was by design, but I'll reach out to our QA team to see if I can get clarification. I don't have a time frame to offer in regards to when I may hear back, so please ensure you're subscribed to this thread so that you'll receive an email notification of new posts here.
Thank you! I look forward to hearing back from you.
Are you referring to renaming the variable? I found a way to rename them by opening up the Timeline and under Triggers in the top right corner is an "X" button which will open your variables up. From there there is a paper/pencil icon; select the variable and rename it.
Deleting all the variables that are no longer used when a course moves to production status, perhaps after a long development period would also be a huge advantage, (and pretty fundamental IMHO).
I'm confused by your response Bruce. I believe she just wanted to rename the variable.
But definitely delete any unused variables to keep track of what is happening is most definitely beneficial.
Just an additional thought based on something I built recently.
I could rename then to "OLD", but really what I wanted to do was delete them.
Hope that clarifies.
Yea, I'll +1 that Bruce. I'm playing around with sliders and it automatically creates a variable for it (slider1, slider2, etc). When I rename the variable the slider is assigned to through the Format/Design tab, it keeps the old variable and creates a new one.
Yes completely! Thanks for the clarification.
I can rename variables created by sliders, and variables that I create myself. The ones that I can't rename are the four variables that are automatically created from a results slide. Those four have default names of: Results.PassPercent, Results.PassPoints, Results.ScorePercent, and Results.ScorePoints. In Storyline 1, I could rename those to have more descriptive names, which was helpful because I use many results slides in the same file. In Storyline 2, I do not have the ability to rename them.
Hi Laura,
You're absolutely right that this is not doable in SL2. I believe someone reported it during the Beta, but perhaps staff will respond to let us know whether we should submit a bug report/feature request. Tx for the reminder!
I don't have any updates to share on if this is by design or not - but have reached out to our QA team to confirm. In the meantime, it can't hurt to send it in as a feature request as well - just in case!
Tx, Ashley. I've just submitted a request. Hope others will do so as well.
Hi Guys,
Any update on this thread as I am facing the same issue.
I have a course that I have built in English as a separate storyline file. Then I duplicated this course and translated it to Dutch . Finally imported the Dutch storyline file into the English storyline file and found that my result variables from both files are clashing and giving unexpected results...
Would be good if you could just rename the results variable to stop this from happening.
Any help would be much appreciated
Hi Krishan,
What version of Storyline are you using? In Storyline 360, you should see a dialog box alerting you that an importing slide has a duplicate variable. You then have the option to copy and rename the variable there.
