Merging modules containing results variables with identical names

Jan 01, 2019

I have built separately several modules, because Storyline 360 is too slow when working on big files. Each module contains one quiz with result slide. I now need to merge all the modules into one course. Since the quizzes were built separately, all results variables have the same name.

I thought I would be able to rename the results variables before merging the modules, but this seems impossible.

I did a test with 2 modules and, when importing one module into another, SL detects 2 results variables with the same name and asks what to do. I chose the second option, which is to copy and rename the variable.

The result I get is this:

There are usually 4 variables created for each results slides. It seems that when importing, Storyline copied only one of those : Results1.ScorePoints.

My question is, how do I merge multiple modules with results slides that have identical names?

Hi JC.  You're correct -- there are 4 variables for your results slide.  When you are prompted for a decision on how to handle the variables, it will ask you to choose for each variable.  You'll have to either click "Copy and Rename" 4 times, or you can check the box "Do this for the next 3 conflicts."   Here's a 2 minute Peek of what that process should look like.

I didn't see the option to "Do this..." in your screenshot above, and I am wondering if you aren't being prompted for all 4 variables.  In the source project, can you check to be sure that you have all 4 results variables?

If you do have 4, and Storyline is not importing them, we should have a look at the source file on our end to see why it isn't importing correctly.  Feel free to share that file here with our team!

Hi Crystal,

Your video was a great help! Your method for importing slides is slightly different than mine, but it makes a big difference in the end results.

I was going to File  > Import Storyline. With that method, there is no option to import all 4 variables and only 1 variable is imported.

Using your method of going to the Slides tab worked exactly as you explain. I get the option to import all variables.

I thought those 2 methods would bring the same results!  But anyway, as long as it works!

So I should be fine merging multiple modules with results slides variables in this way?

Thanks so much for you help!

Hi again.  I actually have the same result, whether using the File or the Slides tab to import from the second project.  I know you mentioned having larger projects; I wonder if file size is at play.

If you are consistently seeing this issue, let's have a look at a couple of your files for testing when you have time.  I want to be sure all the Storyline functions are available to you!

Hey Robyn,

Thanks for reaching out and sharing what you are running into with your project file.

It looks like JC has offered some smart advice and things to check, but we'd be happy to take a look if needed as well.
