I want to move multiple items along 1 motion path, without grouping them

Jul 05, 2017

Hello

How come I can't use a single motion path for multiple objects? I don't want to group everything, because that creates issues with being able to add/remove items from the group later.

It seems that each motion path is only available for 1 item. Why is that? If I create a motion path that is a straight line from left to right, why must I recreate that same motion path (hoping to get it exactly the same each time) for multiple items that I want to move along it?

If that's the only way to do it, can someone tell me a trick how I can duplicate motion paths so they're exactly the same?

And how can I SEE the motion paths? I wish there was a "view paths" option, akin to View Rulers, View Guidelines, etc.

Hi Karen

My understanding is that motion paths by nature can only control one object, but here is what I do

Select all the items I want to animate on a motion path

From the Animations Tab select Add Motion Path

Choose the type of path you want and done, all individual objects have the same motion path

As for viewing the Motion paths when you are on the Animations Tab any Motion path will display as shown below

Thanks, That's a helpful tip.  My issue with viewing motion paths seems to be that they are often on top of each other. I have Motion path 1 that moves the object left to right. Then Motion path 2 moves it back into place... right to left.  Those 2 paths end up on top of each other (otherwise the objects shift)  Is there some other way to reverse/rewind a motion path without actually duplicating it and reversing the direction?

I wish I could create 1 motion path for a layer and use if for both the IN and OUT sequence by simply selecting a checkbox for "reverse direction" on the OUT sequence. Does that exist?

Thanks.

Hey Karen,

There is an option to reverse the path direction, but you would still need to duplicate the object for an IN and OUT sequence.  It sounds like you'd rather have just one path with the option to travel in opposite directions on the same path. That's a cool idea--could you share it with our product team as a feature request?

TIP OF THE DAY:

One trick I use to have an object move back and forth across a single line without having to use two line paths, I use a SQUARE motion path, set easing to none, then flatten the box path down to a line, set the timing to 20 seconds or so, now the object moves gently back and forth in the background with the single control.

You can use STATES on the same object to change the appearance of the object randomly as it is moving, pretty cool effect.
