Ideas and Examples for Using Slide Background Fill (includes demo)

Nov 16, 2015

Hi everyone!

I've used Slide Background Fill on a variety of projects, and I think it's such a neat, but under-used feature available in Storyline.  I developed a Storyline project with a variety of ideas for using slide background fill, and I demo’d this project at our local Storyline Users Group last week.  I thought I'd also make it available here so others in this fantastic community can get in, deconstruct it and hopefully get a few ideas for their own projects.

You can view the published output, and I've attached the zipped .story file below.  I also attached a quick Replay recording of the steps to apply slide background fill to show through another object.

The .story file was created in Storyline 1, so everyone should be able to use it.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi All!  Got a question on whether or not Slide background fill can be used on layers, and the answer is yes, you can. :-)

The steps are the same.  You can format the background of each layer with the same picture that you chose for the base layer or you can chose a completely different picture.  From there, add text, shapes, etc. on those layers and use the slide background fill option as desired.

If you look at the sample file I included above, slide 5.1 (Integrate text and images without special graphic software) actually jumps to different layers to demonstrate the different techniques.

Hope this helps!

Hi Diana!

Fantastic work!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the TEAM Slide! I am totally going to use this idea in a future project!

The last background fill slide in your project is a little problematic for me, though.

In Storyline 2, when the revealed slide appears and sets up for the Close Button, pictures that have text have part of the text obscured when the Close Button appears.

Perhaps this is an SL1 to SL2 upgrade problem/issue?

Other than that, everything looks and works just great!

Hi Mark!

Thanks so much for your kind words!  I'm so happy to hear it's inspired you and that you already have ideas on how to use/apply the technique.

As far as the last slide goes, the "obscured" text was intentional on all of those layers...  it's actually a before/after comparison on how you can use slide background fill to make text or other images blend into the slide or seem as though they are "behind" part of your image.

You can put your mind at ease - no bug or upgrade issues that I can see :-)

All the best to you, and hopefully you can share how your team slide goes with the rest of us.

Hi Diana:

Thanks for the explanation - I was kind of wondering if you maybe had did that on purpose, so now that visual transition makes perfect sense. ;)

Not sure how soon I will be able to use that Team Slide example - but I definitely think it is the most visually compelling of the bunch!

If and when I do, I will let you know! :)

All the best to you too, and thanks again!

@Rene R - Several of us got together with our local ATD chapter to form a Storyline Special Interest Group (SIG) that meets every 8 weeks.  Group members bring questions, project samples to show and other ideas to each session.  It's a lot of fun, and we get to see so many neat examples of work done in Storyline.  Please let me know if you have any other questions.
